Fed-up residents have launched a petition calling for action to end the problems caused by motorists striking Llandrinio Bridge.
The 250-year bridge over the River Severn has been frequently closed for long periods in recent years following incidents, resulting in major diversions.
But Monday’s incident, which saw a length of the supporting wall tumble into the river below, is the last straw with the petition demanding action.
The petition reads: “Over recent years, the bridge has suffered significant damage on multiple occasions, leading to prolonged road closures. These disruptions have caused considerable inconvenience to the local community, hindering businesses and posing challenges for families reliant on school transport.
“We urgently ask Powys County Council and the Welsh Government to allocate funding for the construction of a second bridge over the River Severn at Llandrinio. A new bridge would ensure a reliable transport route that accommodates the contemporary traffic demands of our community, preserves the historical integrity of the existing bridge, and most importantly, safeguards the everyday lives of countless residents.
“A second bridge would not only alleviate the traffic pressure on the current structure but also stimulate economic activities by providing a dependable route for commercial transport. It is vital for the continued prosperity and daily functioning of our community.
“We urge immediate attention to this pressing matter and request the prompt allocation of funds to commence this critical infrastructure project.”
Powys County Council declared yesterday that the Grade I listed bridge had suffered “substantial” damage and could remain closed for some time. They also said that the blocks needed to be retrieved from the River Severn below.
Dyfed-Powys Police said it is investigating what they described as a collision with the responsible vehicle leaving the scene.
