Newtown Football Club helps local food bank

22/01/2026 @ 02:03

The Salvation Army in Newtown has thanked Newtown AFC after the club led a community food drive around last weekend’s Mid Wales derby against Caersws.

Players, staff and their families donated food ahead of the match, with supporters also encouraged to bring items to a collection point at Latham Park. The donations will support The Salvation Army’s local food bank, which continues to help families in Newtown facing rising living costs.

The initiative took place ahead of Newtown’s 1- 0 win, adding a positive community focus to a busy derby day.

Samantha Jones, who leads The Salvation Army’s work in Newtown, said the timing of the collection had made a real difference.

“A local derby is always an exciting event, and I’m so grateful that Newtown AFC chose this moment to support our food bank. Since the New Year, we’ve been sending out food parcels containing three days’ worth of meals to families in need. With higher fuel and food bills and no increase in wages, many people are feeling the strain. Every tin or packet donated truly makes a difference.”

Newtown AFC club chaplain Matt Allport said the club was proud to support a local cause that helps people across the town.

“As a club, it was a privilege to support The Salvation Army and the vital work it does here in Newtown and across the wider community. Newtown AFC is committed to making a positive impact locally, and supporting the food bank is an important part of that commitment.”

The Salvation Army in Newtown provides practical support, community services and pastoral care for people experiencing hardship, isolation and financial difficulty. Its work is based at its community centre on Market Street, which also includes a charity shop and prayer space.

Food donations are accepted throughout the year. More information about The Salvation Army in Newtown can be found at www.salvationarmy.org.uk/newtown.
