Dyfed-Powys Police have issued a full apology after failing to show up to an incident on Borfa Green in Welshpool last month when a cyclist was found injured on the road.
As we reported at the time, volunteers, including off duty firefighters spent over two hours looking after the man in awful weather conditions and also handling road traffic management after 999 calls failed to draw an emergency response.
Local County Councillor Graham Breeze was fuming over the incident and demanded answers from the chiefs of police and the fire service.
And last night, Superintendent Jon Rees, said: “A full review has been completed into the road traffic collision which occurred at Borfa Green, Welshpool, on January 31.
“The review identified that the call for assistance was categorised incorrectly at the point of contact, and whilst there was effective communication between Dyfed-Powys Police and the Welsh Ambulance Trust to ensure the casualty received the correct treatment and care, local Police Officers were not tasked to attend the incident.
“The staff involved have received feedback, enabling future learning and avoidance of any repeat. On behalf of Dyfed-Powys Police I apologise that the high level of service expected of staff was not achieved on this occasion.”
We have not heard back from the fire service, but Cllr Breeze said that he “welcomed the Dyfed-Powys Police apology”.
“It is clear from the response that there was a breakdown in communication at the force’s call centre, despite a number of calls being made for assistance by members of the public.
“The important thing now is that this sort of situation does not happen again.”
The injured man was taken to hospital after about two hours in the rain.
