Another hub gains support to help it grow

A Newtown community hub set up to tackle isolation is continuing to expand its work, supported by a local company.

With Welshpool's Hub continuing to thrive, The Loss Lounge, based on Market Street, was established by Alice Jones and Emma Edwards, who first created the group to support bereaved families. Since opening its doors, the hub has developed into a wider community space offering a mix of informal support and social activities.

The project received early backing from Lock Stock Self Storage, which covered the first month’s rent to help the volunteer run initiative get established.

The hub now provides a donation based café, alongside shared facilities such as a small library, knitting materials and a journalling space. Organisers say it is designed to offer a relaxed environment for people who may be feeling isolated or in need of company.

A range of events and sessions are continuing to be introduced, including themed social gatherings and activities aimed at different parts of the community. Plans include sessions for families who home educate their children, as well as wellbeing focused events.

Alice and Emma launched the Loss Lounge following their own experiences of losing children, and say the project has grown beyond its original focus while continuing to support bereaved families through regular meetings.

They say the hub’s development has been supported by the wider community, with local organisations and businesses contributing in different ways, including help with supplies and services.

Alongside its regular opening hours, the hub is also working with partners to provide additional support for families, including access to food, toiletries and local leisure opportunities.

Organisers say they plan to continue building on the project, with more activities and community led ideas expected in the coming months.
