Welshpool Mayor’s farewell as term draws to close

23/04/2026 @ 11:13

Welshpool will be electing a new Mayor next month with the two one-year terms of office for the incumbent drawing to a close.

Cllr Phil Owen was re-elected for a second term last year, but will now have to step aside for a new Mayor to take the chains of office next month.

Speaking at last night’s monthly full council meeting, he said: “The two years have flown by. I just wanted to thank you all for your friendship and your courtesy and professionalism which has made the job of chairing these meetings so much easier. Thank you all very much.”

Nominations will be taken for the Mayor, and their Deputy, at next month’s Annual General Meeting, with the likelihood that should they take on two terms, they will be the ‘Tour de France’ Mayor for when the sporting extravaganza comes into town next summer.
