The temporary traffic lights on The Cross could be in place “for months” after it appears that the parts required are hard to obtain.
The lights were put in place three months ago following an explosion that took out the box outside The Royal Oak (pictured), causing an underground fire that decimated the traffic lights wiring.
But the distinct lack of work since has infuriated both motorists, pedestrians and businesses, with problems coming to a head this week when they were all stuck on red early morning.
The Trunk Road Agency told us last week that parts were being sourced to complete the work, but there was a more depressing update provided last night by frustrated Powys County Councillor, Graham Breeze.
“My understanding is that the situation with the 4-way traffic lights at The Cross is that the availability of vital parts is still a few months away from being resolved,” he said. “It really is time for alternative solutions to be found.
“I shall be writing to the Trunk Road Agency today and calling on Powys County Council to also take up this matter.”
Welshpool is heading into a busy Bank Holiday Weekend with lights also controlling traffic along the back road, which was due to shut last week, but hasn’t, sparking more confusion for businesses operating on Brook Street.
