Brook Street to close for “safety reasons”

06/05/2026 @ 09:28

Wales & West Utilities has explained this morning why it will need to close Brook Street after all, following our story yesterday that the company had u-turned once again on its decision to keep it open while essential gas work is carried out.

The company is undertaking five weeks of work to replace the town’s gas supply on the ‘back road’, and had originally planned for a full closure, forcing motorists to take a long diversion via Guilsfield and Arddleen.

But with the work about to begin last month, they changed their mind and said it would remain open with traffic lights in place.

However, yesterday it was confirmed that the road WOULD close from May 11-25 and the diversion put back in place. There will be more closures after that when Powys council resurfaces the road.

There could also be more disruptions throughout the town with work expected to continue through until March next year. Access to businesses and properties will remain open.

Wales & West Utilities Adam Smith is managing this work and said: “We are working with the Council on the overall project, but the essential work on Brook Street is necessary so that we can complete this section ahead of their programme.

“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.”
