A Newtown-based construction company has been recognised with a King’s Award for Enterprise, after a programme aimed at improving access to jobs and career progression supported hundreds of people.

Pave-Aways, based on Park Street, received the award for promoting opportunity through social mobility, following the impact of its “Looking After Our Workforce” initiative introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The company said the approach, launched in late 2020, focused on delivering more regional projects while increasing investment in staff wellbeing, training and development. Since 2021, it has supported nearly 500 people, including 288 from disadvantaged backgrounds or not in employment, education or training.

According to the company, the initiative has led to 70 new careers, 94 internal promotions and an average staff length of service now exceeding 10 years.

Managing Director Steven Owen said receiving the award was “a proud moment” for the business and its workforce.

“We’ve always been clear that opportunity is not just about entry into work; it is about progression, upskilling and actively supporting people to move forward,” he said.

“My motivation comes from my dad, a farm labourer who worked hard all his life. I always felt he deserved more opportunity.”

Pave-Aways employs 63 people, with around two fifths starting their careers at the company as apprentices. It has taken part in around 70 careers events and introduced 50 work placements to support recruitment.

Commercial Director Victoria Lawson said the company’s approach focused on developing talent internally, particularly among those who may not have had traditional access to employment or training.

“By giving people an opportunity and showing that we believe in them, we see confidence grow and real progress follow,” she said.

The business has reported 20% growth over the past year and expects turnover of around £20 million, with nearly three quarters of that spent within the local supply chain.

Recent projects include a £10 million science block at Ercall Wood Academy in Telford, refurbishment work at Wellington Market, and planned upgrades at Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury.

The company said it plans to recruit a further five apprentices this year, bringing the number currently undertaking vocational training to 16.

The King’s Awards for Enterprise are among the highest official honours for UK businesses, recognising achievements in areas including innovation, international trade and social mobility.
