Visitors to Welshpool are still paying to park in Church Street Car Park despite free parking every Saturday for six months.
Welshpool Town Council has paid thousands of pounds to Powys County Council to allow free parking every Saturday this spring and summer, but they are still cashing in with some motorists paying.
At this week’s Events & Planning Committee meeting for the Town Council, Wendy Lewis, the Manager of the Welshpool Information Centre, said they had received £21 in parking donations for the month of April, but still witnessed many people paying at the machines on a Saturday.
“The car park has been busy on a Saturday, but there are still lots of people putting money in the machine which is a shame because it says free parking next to it. Can we have a word with Powys to see what they say?” she said.
Ms Lewis added that people don’t seem to be reading the signage despite it clearly stating that it was free.
Powys said they would not be allowing covers on the machines which remain operational, despite receiving around £6,000 in compensation from the Town Council for lost income due to the initiative.
The initiative is set to run for six months in total, finishing in the autumn.
