Police probe latest vandalism at historical headache

24/05/2026 @ 08:18

Welshpool Town Council is reeling after learning that its Motte & Bailey historical site has been vandalised yet again.

Members at the latest Operations & Development Committee were told by the local authority’s Operations Manager, Paul McGrath, that the derelict site had been targeted again despite expensive fencing being installed to keep people out.

The council has conceded that there is nothing much more that can be done to secure the site, but it was explained that CCTV is to be installed as soon as possible, and police have been contacted to investigate the latest spate.

The Motte & Bailey has become a thorn in the Town Council’s side, and there are concerns that it may now just be left in its state of disrepair until grant funding can be found to regenerate it.

However, at some point in the future, the Town Council will need to spend big in order to return the site to its former glory before it is handed back to Powis Estates at the end of its long lease priod.
