An inquest will be held into August public toilet death

Two people have died in Newtown's public toilets this year, a report to town councillors has revealed.

The latest death happened at the Back Lane toilets in August, when a man was found dead.

Police confirmed the death was not being treated as suspicious and the toilets reopened the following day.

An inquest has since been opened.

The report states: "This was the second death in a Newtown public toilet in 2026." 

No further details about the first death are given in the report and there is no suggestion the two incidents are connected.

The issue will be reported to the town council's Services Committee when it meets on Monday.

Councillors will also be told that refurbishment work has now started at the Gravel public toilets.

The facilities have closed while the renovation work is carried out and will remain out of use until January 2027. 

The refurbishment work is separate to the deaths reported at the town's public toilets.

The Operations Manager's report is being presented to councillors for information and discussion.
