Town Council looking to introduce parking charges at Maesydre
The Town Council’s Operations & Development Committee agreed last night to authorise officers to prepare a detailed business case and options appraisal for charging at both parking areas at Maesydre Recreation Ground.
The report would include proposed tariffs and free-parking periods, forecast gross and net income, non-domestic rates and other liabilities, enforcement options, legal and data protection requirements, displacement risks and the effect on existing users.
It comes after recently installed CCTV showed that on average, 30 out of the car park’s 41 spaces were being used every day, up from 17 when the issue was last discussed back in May 2025.
The proposed byelaws being considered by the Council would allow it to charge for parking and use the byelaw fixed penalty notice arrangements to support enforcement. An alternative would be to contract enforcement to a third-party provider, potentially at no direct cost to the Council.
If charging were introduced, automated number plate recognition enforcement linked to their existing payment systems would be considered as the most likely approach.
Councillors at the meeting also agreed that officers should engage with sports clubs, the nearby nursery, school and other affected users as part of the assessment and that a further report be made before any decision to introduce parking charges or enter into an enforcement contract.
Any scheme would cover both the main car park and the parking area in front of the bowling club.
When the idea was first floated last year, it was unanimously voted down by councillors following a huge backlash from MyWelshpool readers.
