Railway woes as morning services cancelled due to broken trains

Welshpool’s dismal rail service was under fire once again this morning after two key trains were cancelled due to a lack of stock.

Social media was buzzing this morning with passengers complaining after the 6.48am Welshpool to Aberystwyth and the 8.27am Aberystwyth to Shrewsbury services were cancelled.

Buses were put on instead, but this latest chapter has highlighted the fragile state of our rail service once again.

A Transport for Wales spokesperson said: “Due to more trains than usual needing repairs, this morning’s 06:48 Welshpool - Aberystwyth and 08:27 Aberystwyth - Shrewsbury were cancelled with rail replacement buses in place.

“We would like to apologise to those passengers travelling for the disruption and inconvenience caused.”

Transport for Wales is set to introduce brand-new Class 197 trains on the Cambrian Line this Autumn, but a date has not been confirmed with driver training and live testing active this summer.

The rollout faced delays because the route uses a unique European Train Control System (ETCS) signalling setup requiring specialised adaptations.
