Welshpool election to fill council seat

Last month’s resignation by Sally Fitzgerald has sparked an election for the Castle Ward on Welshpool Town Council.

Ms Fitzgerald resigned suddenly having not attended a meeting for several months, and this morning the official notice, issued by Powys County Council’s Returning Officer, formally opens the nomination period for candidates wishing to stand for election. 

If the election is contested, polling day will take place on Thursday, October 22.

Residents who wish to take part in the democratic process are reminded to check they are registered to vote. The deadline to register is midnight on October 6, with further deadlines in place for postal and proxy vote applications later in October.

Town Clerk Richard Williams said: “Local democracy plays an important role in shaping the future of Welshpool.

“We encourage anyone who is passionate about their community to consider standing for election and to contact the Returning Officer for further information about the nomination process.”

Forms of nomination can be obtained from the Returning Officer through electoral.services@powys.gov.uk or 01597 826202.

The nomination forms must be submitted by 4pm on September 25 via: nominations@powys.gov.uk or delivered to the Returning Officer, County Hall, Llandrindod Wells, LD1 5LG, between 10am and 4pm on any weekday.
