A week of community litter picks is being planned across Newtown this month as part of ongoing efforts to keep the town tidy.
Newtown Town Council’s Tidy Team is proposing six days of volunteer activities from Monday, October 19 to Saturday, October 24, covering several areas of the town.
The programme is due to begin in the town centre, Pool Road and Dolfor Road, depending on volunteer numbers.
Further sessions are planned in Treowen on Tuesday, October 20, with Garth Owen also potentially included during the afternoon, followed by Trehafren on Wednesday and Maesyrhandir, including Orchid Walk, on Thursday.
Vaynor and Dolfor Road are provisionally scheduled for Friday, before the week concludes with a litter pick in the Green Parks area on Saturday.
The litter picking sessions are proposed to run from 11am until noon, with additional sessions from 1pm until 2pm if there is enough interest.
The Saturday will also include community workshops between 10am and noon, with proposed activities including making bug hotels and flag bunting printing. Glanyrafon has been suggested as the venue, although the location has yet to be finalised.
The activities form part of the wider Tidy Newtown initiative, which is seeking to increase community involvement in looking after different parts of the town.
The Tidy Team is working with local community groups, businesses, schools and colleges in an effort to encourage more people to take part.
Plans are also being considered to recognise volunteers who regularly support litter picking events.
A possible volunteer recognition scheme could include certificates, collectable pin badges or milestone awards for people who continue to take part in the activities.
The latest plans have been presented to Newtown Town Council’s Economy and Environment Committee as part of an update on the autumn Tidy Newtown programme.
