Cross traffic light timings come under fire

Welshpool’s controversial Cross traffic lights are once again in the firing line after a town councillor highlighted a number of voiced concerns last night over their timings.

The lights were out of action for nearly eight months following an underground fire back in January, but the new system appears to be causing fresh problems of their own.

Motorists have been complaining about the lack of time the lights are on green to allow cars through, with sometimes only three cars at-a-time from Berriew Street managing to clear, but last night Cllr Phil Pritchard also highlighted that there is a problem with the sequence timing.

Speaking at the monthly Town Council meeting, Cllr Pritchard highlighted: “I have to say that I am glad to see that after seven-and-a-half months the traffic lights are back, but having stood there and watched them yesterday, the timings of the lights changing from red to green are not in sequence.

“For example, if you are sitting in Berriew Street waiting for them to change from red to green, and you go sharpish there is someone coming out of Severn Street.

“There is not enough pause between the two streets, and I hope that someone with knowledge will come and see it. There is not enough time. They change almost simultaneously.”

But Mayor, Cllr Bill Rowell put the blame on careless motorists driving through the lights on red saying: “We also have drivers that try to sneak through.”

However, the problem has been well documented on social media over the past month with MyWelshpool’s own correspondents also experiencing the issues first hand with one saying: “On Monday this week I went through Severn Street lights just as they were turning from green and almost went head-on into a van coming around the corner from Berriew Street, so Cllr Pritchard’s observations are indeed correct. They need tweaking to avoin an accident.”
