Welshpool finish on a high

In the battle of the border, Joe Monk took 4-28 as Welshpool ended the cricket season on a high with a low scoring win over Alberbury who were dismissed for 109.

Opener Paul Chapman finished unbeaten on 36 with Monk (19) offering mid-order support to see Welshpool home in the 32nd over to finish fifth in Division One.

The season may have ended with a defeat, but Newtown finished a credible seventh in the Shropshire Premier League.

After being put into bat at fellow mid-tablers Frankton, Tom Goodman top scored with 42 as Newtown posted 185 all out.

Despite two early wickets for John Anthony, Frankton steadied the ship and cruised home with six wickets to spare.

It’s not been an easy season for Montgomery who finished bottom of Division One following their final day four-wicket defeat against Knockin & Kinnerley.

It was a different story though for the second string who finished runners-up in Reserve Division Two. Keith Griffiths (4-19) led the way as Monty dismissed Broseley II for 76, and the batsmen lost just three wickets to cruise home. Brian Corfield top scored with 35.

Newtown II finished two places further back in fourth after crushing champions, Wellington 4th. Brandon Baynham took 5-4 from five overs to reduce the visitors to just 62 all out, a total reached for the loss of one wicket.

And it was a winning finale for Welshpool II who set a decent 169-5 for Ellesmere II to chase. Greg Jones (56) top scored. In reply, Sam Cadwallader took 4-8 to dismiss the hosts for just 74.
