Pool edged out by leaders

It was another strong performance but Welshpool returned from Division Two North leaders Rhyl empty handed, writes Gary Williams from Oval Zone Rugby.

Despite conceding 43 points earlier in the season against them, Pool, missing a couple of regulars, started strongly and took the lead after 15 minutes with a try by man of the match, Ryan Goodwin (pictured), converted by Tom Williams.

Rhyl retaliated with a try and conversion of their own, before both teams scored a penalty apiece to give an interval scoreline of 10-10.

The second half was a dour affair with penalties and yellow cards aplenty. But with just minutes on the clock, there was heartbreak for the visitors as, after losing the ball close to the Rhyl try line, the home side gathered and spread the ball wide to score an excellent try.

Welshpool, despite coming home with a losing bonus point, will be disappointed that it wasn't so much more.

Further north, Newtown had a day to forget as they crashed 34-12 to a Bangor side who have threatened a result such as this for most of the season.

Back in Mid Wales, Llanidloes ran one of the promotion contenders, Mold, very close, earning themselves a losing bonus point with a 15-20 loss.

Llani once again proved that, at home, they can give anybody in this division a run for their money. Unfortunately, they have proved to be poor travellers.

There was a second win on the bounce for COBRA in Division One as they claimed the scalp of fellow relegation battlers Bro Ffestiniog by 18-10, a result which gives them some momentum for three massive games coming up against Nant Conwy, Llandudno and Bala.

Try scorers for COBRA were Bryn Edwards and Aled Humphreys with Will Worthington scoring one conversion and two penalties.
