‘How’s that’ for a win?

With the local cricket season set to get underway this Saturday, an incredible moment of sporting history will be shared tomorrow night.

Wednesday evening’s ‘Monty Hour’ will hear from Dave Thomas about “How Montgomery were victorious over England in 1882”.

The Montgomery Express in June 1882 reported: “It is some years since, if ever, such deeds of valour have been enrolled upon the annals of the cricket field in the county of Montgomeryshire as was achieved on the grounds of Lymore Park, Montgomery on Thursday, Friday and Saturday last.”

Over those three days, Montgomery Cricket Club defeated the United XI of England in a game that would go down as one of the most famous feats in the club’s long history.

The remarkable story of the game gives an insight into the early history of the club, but also reveals much about the game and those who played it during an era when the game was developing into the modern one we know today.

This session will be presented from 7pm and to join the Monty Hour on Wednesdays, visit https://montgomery.cloud/hour where you will also find previous recordings and details of upcoming events.

Following a fascinating talk last week on the early history of Montgomery and The Vale, John Davies has agreed to give a number of other talks that will continue to “Lift the Vale” including a topical medieval Christmas celebration to end the year.

The final Monty Hour in April, on Wednesday 28th, will look at Circular Economy Mid-Wales with Jeremy Thorp.
