Welshpool looking for first points of the season

01/11/2025 @ 09:02

Welshpool host a Llangefni side in WRU Division One North this weekend and they will be looking to get their first points of the season, writes Gary Williams.

Sitting two places above the Maesydre team in the lowly reaches of the division, it is the ideal time for Pool to show what they are made of. The next two games, against bottom of the table clubs Llangefni at home and Bethesda away are the chance for Pool to show that they are worthy of a place amongst the elite of North Wales.

There are fireworks planned at the Maesydre on Saturday evening, let’s hope that there are some during the afternoon as well!

Also, in Division One, COBRA make the trip north to struggling Colwyn Bay who, like Welshpool, were promoted last season and are so far pointless. The Bay are sure to provide stubborn resistance but the visitors should come home with the points.

Newtown, on the back of two home defeats, one in the league and one in the cup, travel to improving Bro Ffestiniog in Division Two and will be looking to get their league campaign back on track. On their home turf, Bro will be a tough nut to crack and home advantage could be decisive.

It’s third against fourth as Machynlleth host Rhyl. At home, Mach are formidable but visitors Rhyl are on a great run of form and this one could go either way. Bottom club, Llanidloes, take on Teirw Nant at Cae Hafren and the hosts will need to be at their best to get their first points of the season.

COBRA 2nds, sitting unbeaten at the top of Division Three North East travel to Bro Gwernant (Llangollen) and will be expecting to extend their winning run. The Meifod men are having a great season in league and cup. Their reward for progressing to the last 16 of the WRU Division 5 National Cup is a home tie against Tondu 2nds on December 6.

In the North Wales Youth league, both Newtown (v Wrexham) and COBRA (v Rhyl) have home games.
