The long-awaited Division One North return derby between Welshpool and COBRA takes place on Saturday, with the Parkinsons Cymru 10x10km Challenge, which is being supported by MyWelshpool, also set to feature on the day.
Welshpool, fresh from picking up their first points of the season in a thrilling 25-25 draw at Llandudno last weekend, will be looking forward to welcoming their old foes, COBRA, to Maesydre, writes Gary Williams.
While most people will not be expecting a win for the home side, there is a belief in the camp that things are on the up as players return from injury which should make this a much closer encounter than the 59-7 defeat in Meifod earlier in the season.
One of the few neutrals on the day will be former Llanfair Caereinion Headteacher Philip Jones who is organising the 10x10km Challenge which is encouraging people to complete 10 challenges of 10kms in a fortnight next March.
“Naturally with links to the school, the Caereinion Old Boys Rugby Association hold a very special place in my heart whilst Welshpool have been very supportive in my charity work,” said Phil, who will be collecting on the day so any loose change would be welcomed.
Meanwhile, Newtown, second in Division Two North, welcome Llanidloes to the Rec in another Mid Wales derby. The score earlier in the season was 7-22 to Newtown and they will expect to at least match this against a team who are yet to win a game this season.
Their excellent 14-22 win last weekend at third placed Rhyl has given them a bit of breathing space in the table and another good set of points from Saturday's game will mean 2026 can't come quick enough for Newtown as they look to clinch one of the two promotion spots.
Both Newtown Youth and COBRA Youth are on the road to Parc Eirias, Colwyn Bay, for the North Wales Youth Finals.
In the Plate final, COBRA take on Nant Conwy whilst Newtown play Llangefni in the Bowl Final. Best of luck to both clubs.
