Welshpool Livestock Sales report another busy day of trading at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (48)

A good show of 48 Otm cattle met with an overall average of 111.09ppkg. Topping the section was JJ Price & Co, The Farm, with a Limousin cow weighing 751kg making £1013.85 (135ppkg). J & B Vaughan, Sychtyn, sold a Limousin otm cow weighing 675kg making £904.50(134ppkg). JP & CM Jones, Maesterran, also presented a 643kg Limousin cow making £880.91(137ppkg). R A Meddins, Hafod, presented a 761ppkg Limousin cow 48 – 72 months old making £996.91 (131ppkg).

R I Owen & Co, Cwmffynnon, presented 3 Limousin under 48 month old heifers weighing 594kg, 567kg and 564kg making £1033.56 (174ppkg), £1020.60(180ppkg) and £998.23(177ppkg) respectively.

PRIME HOGGETS (4655)

An entry of 4655 prime hoggets selling to an average of 169.05ppkg (-5.76ppkg on last week)

Super Lights (15) to 140ppkg from E S Morgan & Co, Bryndu. Average of 140ppkg.

Lights (395) to 163ppkg from IRH Bebb, Ffridd-Cowny. Others to 162ppkg from C R Davies, Troedrhiwfronfrech. Average of 147.89ppkg.

Standards (1295) to 189ppkg from I E Roberts & Son, Maesdyfnant & D G Jones, Cefn Hir Fawr. Others to 188ppkg from J Meredith, Lodge Farm. Average of 165.01ppkg.

Mediums (1740) to 203ppkg from E P Hughes & Co, Porth. Others to 202ppkg from D R Owen * Sons, Sandilands. Average of 174.67ppkg.

Heavies (1008) to 192ppkg from E L Evans, Derlwyn. Others to 179ppkg from G James & Sons, Penybank. Average of 165.94ppkg.

Over Weights (139) to 162ppkg from D R Owens & Sons, Sandilands. Others to 161ppkg from R C Jones & Sons, Rockley. Average of 151.97ppkg.

Its is advised that Hoggets are belly clipped.

CULL SHEEP (1648)

A slightly smaller entry of 1648 ewes averaging £52.66. (-£2.99 on the previous week). An outstanding entry from R G Jenkins & Co, Cilhaul, Trefeglwys, reached £109. An entry of 87 cull rams averaging £65.79, topping at £119 presented by R Richards & Co, Maenllengen, Adfa. Overall trade was strong for stronger ewes and rams.

CULL EWE VENDORS: Please ensure all cull sheep are correctly identified when offered for sale at the market.

STORE LAMBS

A pleasing entry of 730 store lambs selling to an average of £49.50.  Top price went to two pens of Suffolk x tup lambs from RG & JL Peate, Cwmderw.  A run of Texel x lambs from D S Griffiths, Braich y Fedw received a good demand selling to a top of £68.50.  T H Davies & Son, Clegyrddwr presented a pen of strong Mule lambs selling to £63.50, L S Philpott & Son, Birch Tree Cottage sold Texel x lambs to £62 while Mr S Lane, New Hall presented Texel x ewe lambs to £61. 

The sale of store lambs is to commence as usual next Monday 10.30am.

COWS AND CALVES

A good entry of cows and calves including a special entry of 9 superb outfits from G Lewis, Sychlyn, Pool Quay. 8 of the 9 outfits on offer were British Blue x Limousin 1st calvers with Limousin calves at foot which sold to a fantastic £3000 for a heifer with a Limousin x heifer calf at foot. A similar outfit made £2920, whilst a heifer with a bull calf topped £2820. A Limousin x 1st calver with a Limousin bull calf from the same home sold at £2620. Overall the 9 averaged £2687.

A welsh Black x 1st calver with a Limousin x heifer calf presented by F J Owens & Co, Llettygynfach, sold for £1720, whilst a Blonde x cow with a bull calf at foot from the same home sold for £1500.

E A Powell & Son, Dolygarn, sold a British Blue 2nd calver with a Charolais bull calf for £1650. A J Powell, Llwynmawr Mill, Kerry, sold a British Blue x 2nd calver with a Limousin x heifer calf for £1420.

A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £2800 + 3 lots, £2500 - £2800 5 lots, £2000 + 1 lot, £1600 - £1800 3 lots, £1400 - £1600 2 lots, £1200 - £1400 3 lots, £1000 - £1200 3 lots.

IN-LAMB BELTEX

37 In-Lamb Purebred Beltex ewes from the ‘Glantre’ flock of M & H Owens, Glantre, Pont Sian, went under the hammer on Monday. The majority were either carrying twins or singles and were in-lamb to ‘Glantre Rufus’ and due Mid-March onwards. Leading the way were the first pair in the ring which made £630. With other leading prices at £470, £350 and £340. Overall the ewes averaged £280.

STORE CATTLE

A small entry of 96 store cattle to start the year, with averages for the day being 189.30ppkg or £950.18 per head for steers and Heifers 184.64ppkg or £814.74 per head.
