Welshpool’s oldest leisure centre will re-open on Sunday following an extensive overhaul, with its new owners urging the town to “come down and take a look”.
The Armoury has re-opened under a Joint Venture with Welshpool Town Council which will see the facility run by CV Gym Services managed by Berriew man Chris Stephens.
The ailing centre was taken over after it was reportedly costing the Welshpool tax payer up to £50,000 a year to keep open. The new owners have vowed to turn the centre’s fortunes around and have invested a “serious” amount of money to bring it up to modern standards with similar equipment that is used at the famous David Lloyd gyms.
“We’ve had to make some changes in order to turn it into a viable business that has something for everyone,” said Mr Stephens. “We have invested a serious amount of money to turn it into a modern fitness facility. We still have a lot of work to do but it is really taking shape nicely. All I ask is for the people of Welshpool to come and have a look for themselves without any obligations.
“We still have a lot of work to do before we open but those that have been down to take a look have been impressed with what they have seen.”
The new Armoury provides a state-of-the-art fitness site comprising of a huge cardio room as well as a free and standing weights room. A multi functional hall can adapt to host badminton, kids football, aerobics, spinning, self defence, boxercise as well as being available to hire for parties.
Elsewhere, the squash courts could soon welcome back a local league and the facility’s meeting room and changing rooms are also being refurbished. The bar remains open upstairs.
Mr Stephens admits that the changes have unfortunately upset some regulars who played five-a-side football but said they were necessary or the town would have lost the facility for good.
The Armoury will reopen on Sunday and following that, it will be open Monday-Saturday from 8.30am-10pm.
