Welshpool Livestock Sales report on Monday’s auction at Buttington Cross.

OTMS (60)

A good show of 60 Otm cattle this week reaching an overall average of 126.53ppkg. Otm cows topped at £1537.20 (180ppkg) for a 854kg Charolais cow from JE Evans & Son, Middle Nantserth. J & K Higgs, Cwmfron, presented a Limousin Otm cow weighing 839kg making £1258.50 (150ppkg). Cows 48 to 72 months topped at £1338.12(189ppkg) for a 708kg  British Blue from TE Lewis & Son, Abergwenlas. JE Evans & Son, Middle Nantserth, presented a 41 month old Charolais heifer weighing 678kg making £996.66 (147ppkg). Steers under 48 months topped at £1140.03 (159ppkg ) from Evans Bros, Tynewydd, for a Limousin weighing 717kg.

OTM Cows averaged 123.10ppkg / £8005.22

Cows 48 – 72 months averaged 137.45ppkg / £931.66

Heifers under 48 months averaged 132.84ppkg / £823.90

Steers under 48 months averaged 154.16ppkg / £1071.40

Overall average of 124.67ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (2425)

An entry of 2425 prime lambs selling to an average of 199.52ppkg.

Lights (170) to 223ppkg from Ellis Lloyd & Co, Garthiaen. Others to 222ppkg from D G Jones, Cefn Hir Fawr. Average of 216.80ppkg.

Standards (785) to 237ppkg from BE & BE Langford, Llettymeibion Others to 235pkg from Red House Farm, Aberhafesp. Average of 204.04ppkg.

Mediums (1423) to 241ppkg from S Smith, Pentre Farm Cottage. Others to 238ppkg from H G Ellis & Co, Tynywern.  Average of 195.81ppkg.

Heavies (27) to 233ppkg from S Smith, Pentre Farm Cottage. Others to 228ppkg from S Smith, Pentre Farm Cottage. Average of 193.62ppkg.

Over Weights (3) to 180ppkg from D P Casewell, Tanrhiw. Average of 176.34ppkg.

PRIME HOGGETS (1182)

An entry of 1182 prime hoggets selling to an average of 159.16ppkg

Lights (159) to 146ppkg from J W Jones, Tyn Y Braich . Others to 143ppkg from JR & ME Roberts, Penarddlas. Average of 139.61ppkg.

Standards (379) to 179ppkg from A C Thomas, Middle Gwernerin. Others to 171ppkg from J D Edwards & Son, Heath Farm. Average of 156.58ppkg.

Mediums (335) to 188ppkg from M P B Ashton & Son, Belan Ddu. Others to 181ppkg. Average of 168.14ppkg.

Heavies (81) to 183ppkg from E W Jones, Tytanyfoel& DR Owen & Sons, Sandilands. Others to 182ppkg from E W Jones, Tytanyfoel . Average of 161.20ppkg.

Over Weights (128) to 164ppkg from E W Jones, Tytanyfoel & M Evans, Gate Farm. Others to 162ppkg from E W Jones, Tytanyfoel. Average of 149.59ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1913)

An entry of 1913 cull sheep yesterday saw the 1779 ewes averaging £63.32 and 62 rams averaged £82. Ewes topped at £125 presented by TH, ME & EJ Jones, Plas Coch. Demand was strong on top quality rams peaking at £136 presented by D R Owen & Sons, Sandilands. Overall a firmer trade was achieved.

COUPLES

A reduced entry of 478 couples including 214 hoggs. The 164 older ewes topped at £175 for a Suffolkx 3 year old ewe with twin lambs from J Lewis, St. Winifreds Cottage and Suffolk x 3 year old ewes with single lambs to £135.

5 Cheviot as found ewes with twin lambs sold for £145 from E P Hughes & Co, Porth, and 17 Cheviot as found ewes with single lambs from the same home sold for £105. The 314 hoggs including an entry of 49 units from F Bailey, Pensarn, topped at £184 for 4 Texel x hogs with single lambs and £183 for 7 Texel x hogs with single lambs also from the same home. F Baileys consignment averaged £170.72 (£85.36 per head). Other notable hogs presented came from MJ & JM Price, Penycrug Farm, who put forward 7 mule hogs with single lambs which sold for £178.

J V Davies & Co, Garth Fawr, sold 40 hoggs with single lambs to £173 for 10 speckled, Messrs Davies’ run averaged £164.76 (£82.38 per head).

Next week have our 2nd prize sale of hogs and lambs, kindly sponsored by the British Wool Board, with classes for the following: Pen of 10 or more Texels, Pen of 10 or more Mules, Pen of 10 or more Suffolks, Pen of 10 or more Other Breed.

COWS & CALVES

An entry of 36 cows and calves met with a good trade. Top price of the day was £2480 from M J Bower, Footbridge Farm, with a Pedigree Limousin 2012 born cow with her Limousin Bull calf, also from the same home a Pedigree Limousin cow with her Limousin Bull calf making £2300. MJ Bower presented 8 outfits averaging £1897.50. From D P Evans, Moel-y-Garth, was a Limousin x 1st calver with her Limousin heifer calf making £2400, also rom the same home were two  Limousin x 1st calvers one with a bull calf the other with a heifer calf making £2200. Mr Evans presented 6 outfits averaging £2120. RE & CJ Davies, Boycott Hall, sold a Limouisn x 1st calver with her Limouisn bull calf to £2080. A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £2200+ 6 lots, £2000 - £2200 4 lots, £1800 - £2000 7 lots, £1600 - £1800 9 lots, £1400- £1600 4 lots, £1200 - £1400 4 lots, £1000 - £1200 1 lot.
