This week's Welshpool Livestock Sales report is brought to you by Dennis Shingler & Sons Ltd.

OTMS (37)

An entry of 37 Otm cattle this week selling to a top of £1346.40 (170ppkg) for a 792kg Limousin otm cow from E H Pennie & Son, Gwern-Y-Ychain. MPB Ashton & Son, Belan Ddu, presented a Limousin otm cow weighing 682kg making £1091.20 (160ppkg). Cows 48 – 72 months topped at £1164.80 (160ppkg) for a British Blue weighing 728 kg from BTR & R Gittins, Lower Sylfaen. RG & EM & PG Roberts, Ty Mawr, presented a 38 month old 595kg Limousin heifer making £940.10 (158ppkg). One Limousin bull under 72 months forward from A Rees & Son, Tynllwyn, weighed 807kg making £1339.62(166ppkg).

OTM Cows averaged 120.23ppkg / £812.80

Cows 48 – 72 months averaged 136.94ppkg / £1009.24

Heifers under 48 months averaged 129.41ppkg / £727.96

Bulls under 72 months averaged 166ppkg / £1339.62

Overall average of 125.48ppkg

An entry of 392 prime hoggets selling to an average of 139.12ppkg

Lights (31) to 154ppkg from JR & ME Roberts, Penarddlas . Others to 150ppkg from DWE Davies, Rhydyfydrwydd. Average of 146.50ppkg.

Standards (75) to 154ppkg from JR & M Davies, Penisarllan. Others to 149ppkg from C R Pryce, Pentre Farm. Average of 134.39ppkg.

Mediums (69) to 168ppkg from Evan Davies & Co, Red House. Others to 157ppkg from M Brennan, Werniog. Average of 141.69ppkg.

Heavies (26) to 176ppkg from Evan Davies & Co, Red House. Others to 149ppkg from C G Davies & Son, Tynypwll . Average of 149.45ppkg.

Over Weights (10) to 165ppkg from C Lloyd, Church House. Others to 152ppkg from SRL Leonard, Brodawel.  Average of 138.01ppkg.


A larger entry of 2833 ewes which was 700 more than the previous week. Trade was much sharper on bigger and well finished ewes, selling to an average of £60.32 (+£4 on last week). Topping the ewe section at £104 was  E & H Chapman, Morfodion and N Oughton, Lymore Farm.  A smaller entry of rams this week achieving an average of £74.43. Rams topped at £120 from JM & BJ Langford & Son, Pwllan.


A reduced entry of 315 couples comprising of 128 older ewes and 187 hoggs and lambs were met with another strong trade. Topping at £186 for a pen of 5 strong Texel x hogs with 5 Charollais x lambs at foot from F Bailey, Pensarn. Mr Bailey sold a further 38 hoggs and lambs selling to £184 twice for Texel x hogs and lambs, his whole run averaged £165 or £82.63 a life.

T M Davies, Wynnstay Farm, presented 35 strong hoggs and lambs selling to £170 for 6 Mules and £160 again for 6 Mules and pens of Texel x hogs to £154, with his whole run averaging £152/£76 a life.

G & TD Jones, Y Gadir, sold 3 Mules with Single lambs to £160 and R P Morgan & Son, The Farm, sold 12 Texel x hoggs £160.

A smaller number of older ewes were again met with a boyant trade, hitting a high of £175 for 2 Beltex x Ewes ( 1 yearling and 1 2 year old) with cracking twin lambs at foot from L R Jones, Bryn Awel, who also presented 2 full mouth Beltex x ewes again with cracking single lambs at foot which sold for £149.

L & L Farming, Tyn Y Shettin, sold 2 as found Mules with single lambs to £124 and 2 as found Suffolks with single lambs for £120.

The special entry of 100 welsh ewes in flock ages with single lambs at foot from J M Gayther, Little Crogau, topped at £92 with the whole run averaging £81/ £40.50 a life.

A reduced entry of cows and calves met with a sound trade once again with quality well sought after as ever. Topping the trade this week at £2600 was a Limousin cow born 2011 with a heifer calf at foot presented by E P Parkes & Son, New House Farm. A Blonde x British Blue from the same home with a Lim calf at foot sold for £2200. Presented by G Roberts, Belle Vue, Abermule, was a Beef shorthorn x cow with a Limousin steer calf at foot which made £2280.

From D P & R E Evans, Moelygarth, were 5 Limousin x and 1 Hereford x 1st calver with Limousin heifer calves at foot which sold to a top of £2150, with others at £2120, £2100 and an overall average of £2008.

RE & CJ Davies, Boycott Hall, Yockleton, sold 4 Limousin x 1st calvers and 1 Hereford x with Limousin calves at foot to a top pf £2100 with others at £2020 (x2) to average £1962.

A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £2500 + 1 lot, £2200-£2500 2 lots, £2000 - £2200 6 lots, £1800 -£2000 4 lots, £1600-£1800 3 lots, £1400 - £1600 3 lots, £1200 -£1400 2 lots.


Two heifers presented by Alan Morris, Maestanyglwyden, were forward in the dairy section. Both heifers were sired by Topshot and were quiet to milk, with little more demand for them than in recent times the sold to a solid trade making £1180 and £1050.
