Town Council renews objections to garage and store plan

23/06/2016 @ 08:52

A new application to open a petrol station with a convenience store and offices at Buttington Cross won’t be backed by Welshpool Town Council.

Last year the council opposed the plans by Tuffins and they were withdrawn following presentation to Powys County Council.

Then the council opposed the plans because they were on land designated for industrial use and outside the shopping zone set out in the town shopping zone plan and voted to do so again on Wednesday night.

The site is an industrial zone and for business use only and not retail which the council supports. The Town Council will object and resist any retail development which is not located within the shopping zone set out in the plan.

The shopping zone was set up to avoid any out-of-town developments taking trade from the town centre, but it exempts Coed y Dinas and the Old Station building.

It will now be considered by Powys County Council, but submitted with a recommendation to refuse from the local planners.
