Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a lively auction at  Buttington Cross on Monday, brought to you by Dennis Shingler & Sons.

OTMS (41)

A good show of Otm cattle with week selling to a top of £1140.10 for a 877kg Limousin from ED & ER Davies, Marton Hall. O T Evans, Delfryn, presented a 761kg Limousin making £1095.84.  Cows 48 – 72 months topped at £600.30 for a 522 kg Charolais cow from A E Morgan & Son, Cincoed. Heifers under 48 months topped at £769.60 for a 592kg Welsh Black from WG & SE Vaughan, Penybank. Steers under 48 months topped at £1094.80 for a Fresian weighing in at 782kg.

OTM Cows (x33) averaged 113.12ppkg / £714.29

Otm Bull (x2) averaged 104.51ppkg / £1156.92

Cows 48 to 72 months (x1) averaged 115ppkg / £600.30

Heifers Under 48 months (x3) averaged 111.48ppkg / £649.17

Bulls under 72 months  (x1) averaged 134ppkg / £905.84

Overall average of 113ppkg

PRIME LAMBS (5582)

An entry of 5582 prime lambs sold to an average of 179.88ppkg.

Lights (320) to 178ppkg from R A Jones, Red Gwenthrew. Others to 172ppkg from T H Davies & Sons, Clegyrddwr. Average of 159.76ppkg.

Standards (1271) to 207ppkg from Red House Farm, Aberhafesp. Others to 200ppkg from Red House farm, Aberhafesp. Average of 178.49ppkg

Mediums (2821) to 238ppkg from E L Evans, Derlwyn. Others to 233pkg from S Smith, Pentre Farm Cottage. Average of  182.11ppkg.

Heavies (933) to 218ppkg from E L Evans, Derlwyn. Others to 196ppkg from T H Vaughan & Son, Maesmochnant Uchaf. Average of 179.85ppkg.

Over Weights (105) to 182ppkg  from IWL & PE Evans, Maescarneddau. Others to 180pkg from T H Vaughan & Son, Maesmochnant Uchaf. Average of 170.95ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (3024)

Today saw an entry of 2921 cull ewes achieving an average of £45.13, this was very similar to last week. Ewes topped at £107 for 3 ewes from CJ & ME Williams, Minysarn. Red House Farm, Aberhafesp, presented 5 ewes making £104. An entry of 77 rams met with an average of £51.58, topping at £128 from RC & GR  Evans, Fron. ME & MB Roberts, Woodleasowes, presented a ram making £114. Overall trade was Very similar to previous weeks.

STORE LAMBS (1015)

Another strong entry of 1,024 store lambs entering the market this week selling to an overall average of £52. Top call went for a pen of strong Texel x mixed/clean lambs to £67 from M J Morgan, Mill Farm with strong Texel and Charollais x tup lambs from T M Davies, Wynnstay Farm and DW & VM Jennings, Castellan Farm selling to £65.50.

Short term, large frame lambs selling from £55-£60 with longer term lambs back slightly on the previous week.  Longer term lambs selling from £40-£50.

Theave Lambs (329) averaged £55.96

Mixed and Clean lambs (278) averaged £48.93

Wether lambs (27) averaged £34.26

Tup Lambs (356) averaged £55.73

Mixed/Tup Lambs (25) averaged £54.60

BREEDING EWES (2628)

Firstly can I say a Thank you to all vendors for their support in relation to our new catalogued sales and the fantastic entry of 2628 ewes, with quality on offer from start to finish we sold to a 99% clearance. Top price of the day went to MRM Matthew, Tanyfron, who presented a shapey Pure Bred Blue Texel 4 year old that sold for £180. Top price yearlings of the day went to WP Owen, Cefn Uchaf, for a pen of 20 Texel x which sold for £160, another pen of 20 from the same home made £155.

J F Woosnam, Eisteddle, presented 2 pens of 20 yearling mule which hit £155 and £150 respectively. 6 Beltex x yearlings from TPW Davies, Lawnt Isaf, made £150. The sale saw Bryn Jones, Fraithwen, sell is annual consignment of 250 yearling ewes comprising of 130 improved welsh and 120 mules. The improved welsh peaked at £145 for a pen of 16 and the mules at £146, with his whole run averaging £134/head. Other large consignments were entered from J O Evans, Llidiart Carnau who entered a run of 50 ( 24 Improved Welsh and 26 Beulahs) A pen of 16 Beulahs hit £142 and improved Welsh sold to £140 with his run averaging £138/head. 2 year old ewes topped at £140 for 10 ¾ Texels from D A Rees & Co, Esgair, who have further pens of the same ewes making £135.

R T Davies & Son, Bwlchgarreg, presented 35 2 year old ewes, 9 mules topped at £108 and 20 beulah which hit £120.

3 year old ewes topped at £132 for 2 Beltex x from D W P Griffiths, Park Lodge. Which others hitting £125 for a pen of 22 Mules from JHG Griffiths, Bettws Hill. The full mouth ewe section saw the days highest price of £180 for a Pure Bred Blue Texel from MRM Matthews, Tanyfron,, with other Full Mouth ewes to £98 for 10 Texel x from S T Jones, Arllen Fawr.

As found ewes peaked at £100 for 18 Mules from D Evans, Pantycronw, with others to £92 for 8 Texel x from RG & JL Peate, Cwmderw.

A small entry of 129 ewe lambs peaked at £99 for 10 Mules from A M Jones, Middle Farm, who sold further pens to £98, £93 and £86 respectively. D W Evans, Ty Mawr, sold 20 Mule ewe lambs to £86 and 10 Texel x to £80.

Yearling Ewes (1695) averaged £124

2 Year Old Ewes (177) averaged £89

3 Year Old Ewes (116) averaged £76

Full Mouth Ewes (259) averaged £75

As Found Ewes (250) averaged £67

Ewe Lambs (129) averaged £85
