Welshpool Livestock Sales report on an auction at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (54)

A good show of 54 Otm cattle this week, topping the otm section was J Gethin, Tynrhos, with a Charolais cow weighing 892kg making £1248.80 (140ppkg). Another Charolais cow from the same home weighed 800kg making £1024 (128ppkg). Cows 48 to 72 months topped at £1112.67 (117ppkg) for a 951kg British Blue from J Gethin, Tynrhos. PL Harrison, Neuaddlwyd, presented a 675kg 42 month old cow making £972 (144ppkg). Heifers under 48 months topped at £872.62 (161ppkg)  for a 542kg Limousin from C Carter, Moelwylim. Also from the same home another limousin heifer weighing 536kg making £862.96 (161ppkg).

Otm Cow (x29) averaged 106.52ppkg / £701.22

Cows 48 to 72 months (x14) averaged 113.23ppkg / £746

Heifers Under 48 months (x9) averaged 119.53ppkg / £699.27

Bulls under 72 months (x2) averaged 112ppkg / £963.16

Overall average of 110.48ppkg

PRIME LAMBS (5773)

An entry of 5773 prime lambs sold to an average of 156.49ppkg.

Lights (406) to 156ppkg from J S Jones, White House. Others to 156ppkg from CP & VM Andrew & Son, Bronfedw. Average of 137.06ppkg.

Standards (1235) to 181ppkg from NG & GG Davies, Trawsgelli. Others to 176ppkg from J E Watson, Upper Lether. Average of 158.22ppkg

Mediums (2227) to 228ppkg from I E Roberts & Son, Maesdyfnant. Others to 197ppkg from T K Robinson, Tynewydd. Average of  158.17ppkg.

Heavies (1435) to 236ppkg & 227ppkg from E L Evans, Derlwyn. Others to 202ppkg from CL & C Watkins, Bank Farm. Average of 150.29ppkg.

Over Weights (322) to 179ppkg  from TH Vaughan & Son, Maes Mochnant Uchaf. Others to 150pkg from T H Vaughan & Son, Maes Mochnant Uchaf. Average of 139.41ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2026)

An entry of 2026 cull sheep met with averages of £49.03 for ewes and £66 for rams. Topping the cull ewe section at £103 was O T Evans, Delfryn. D R Owen & Sons, Sandilands, presented ewes making £100.50.

STORE LAMBS (1301)

A good entry of 1301 store lambs this week topping at £66.50 for Mule tup lambs from W & R Lewis, Springfiled. H J Marsh & Sons, Stokesay Castle Farm, presented Suffolk x Mixed and clean lambs making £65. Theave lambs topped at £64.50 for 30 Texel x lambs from DN & DW Jones, Plasnewydd. Wether lambs topped at £60 for 12 mule lambs from A M Jones, Middle Farm.

Theave Lambs (224) averaged £48.81

Mixed and clean lambs (445) averaged £51.59

Wether lambs (182) averaged £40.42

Tup lambs (448) averaged £49.16

BREEDING EWES (137)

A small season entry of breeding ewes and ewe lambs. It was clean that many purchasers having now acquired the stock they need, the demand had decreased. However, two pens of Texel x ewe lambs suitable for tupping from P S Jerman, Upper Pentre, sold for £75. Mule ewe lambs topped at £64 for a pen of 7 from A M Jones, Middle Farm, and then £62 for a pen of 10  from J G Jones, Cefn Brith.

A small selection of breeding ewes sold to £52 for a pen of 5 Welsh ewes in flock ages from J Gibson, Cwm Feinion.

COWS & CALVES

An entry of 45 cows and calves and 23 heifers forward this Monday. Cows and calves topped at £2100 for a British Blue x 1st calver with her Limouisn x bull calf from A Roberts, Glanrafon, Llwynmawr. Also from the same home was a Pedigree Limousin 1st calver with a Limousin heifer calf amking £2080. RE & CJ Davies, Boycott Hall, Yockleton, presented a Limousin x 1st calver with her Limousin heifer calf making £1950. DP & RE Evans, Moelygarth Farm, presented a Limousin x 1st calver with her Limousin bull calf making £1880. A consignment of 9 in-calf heifers from G E Davies & Son, Cwmbromley, Sarn, topped at £2120 for a Pedigree Limousin heifer in-calf to a Pedigree Limousin bull ‘Bolero’, next at £1800 was another pedigree Limousin in calf to the same bull. The 9 in-calf heifers from G E Davies & Sons, Cwmbromley, averaged £1664.44.

E H Pennie & Son, Gwern-Yr-Ychain, presented 5 in-calf heifers selling to £2550 for a Pedigree Limousin in-calf to a Pedigree Limousin bull ‘Sarkley Influx’. Next at £2420 another pedigree Limousin heofer in calf to the same bull. The 5 in calf heiers from the Pennie Family averaged £2194. Trade was very good on in-calf heifers.

The breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows:

£2000+ 6 lots, £1800 - £2000 5 lots, £1600 - £1800 11 lots, £1400 - £1600 10 lots, £1200 - £1400 12 lots, £1000 - £1200 7 lots, < £1000 14 lots.
