Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (28)

A slightly smaller entry of otm cattle this week selling to a top of £1382.50 (175ppkg) for a 790kg Limousin from CV & EM Lewis, Buttington New Hall. Also from the same home another Limousin weighing in at 734kg making £1306.52 (178ppkg). EJ & AJ Roberts, Longlands, sold a 827kg Limousin making £1356.28(164ppkg). Cows 48 to 72 months topped at £1038.06 (158ppkg) for a Limousin weighing 657kg from DP Evans, Moel Y Garth Farm.

Otm Cows (x25) averaged 134.12ppkg / £897.46.

Cows 48 – 72 months (x2) averaged 147.58ppkg / £962.23.

Heifers under 48 months (x1) made 137ppkg /  £828.85.

Overall average of 135.15ppkg – MORE CATTLE WANTED TO MEET DEMAND.

PRIME LAMBS (2945)

An entry of 2945 Prime Lambs sold to an average of 242.16ppkg.

Lights (238) to 250ppkg from B Lewis, Ty Crugyn. Others to 244ppkg from EO &LM & SP Richards, Red House Farm. Average of 230.40ppkg.

Standards (1312) to 309ppkg  from EL & JD Jones, Neuadd Fawr. Others to 299ppkg from Red House Farm, Aberhafesp. Average of 238.60ppkg.

Mediums (1227) to 301ppkg from EL & JD Jones, Neuadd Fawr. Others to 294ppkg from TH Vaughan & Son, Maesmochnant Uchaf. Average of 247.23ppkg.

Heavies (105) to 276ppkg from TH Vaughan & Son, Maesmochant Uchaf. Others to 263ppkg from JR & RM & JP Andrew, Bronheulog. Average of 251.38ppkg.

PRIME HOGGETS (690)

An entry of 690 prime hoggs sold to an average of  164.22ppkg.

Lights (80) to 167ppkg from IA Poole, Upper Cwm Heyhope. Others to 165ppkg from EW Jones, Tytanyfoel. Average of 164.85ppkg.

Standards (93) to 176ppkg from E Rees & Co, Church House. Others to 175ppkg from J T Jones, Tynewydd Cyffin. Average of 156.02ppkg.

Mediums (116) to  196ppkg from E Rees & Co, Church House. Others to 190ppkg from EW Jones, Tytanyfoel. Average of 169.59ppkg

Heavies (90) to 194ppkg from G & A Orrells, Maesderwen. Others to 192ppkg from MH Pugh, Gilfach. Average of  173.50ppkg.  

Over Weights (96) to 212ppkg from EW Howells & Son, Oakwood . Others to 177ppkg from V Evans & Partners, Hall Mill. Average of 161.97ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2231)

A good entry of culls this week seing averages of £58 for ewes and £73 for rams. Topping the cull ewe section was CE Pryce, Yr Helyg, making £123. GM Mills, Penisaf Manledd, presented a ewe making £120, and two ewes making £112. Rams topped at £126 for 4 rams from H B Tudor & Co, Tynberllan. ED & ER Davies, Marton Hall, presented a ram making £113.

COUPLES

Despite the unsettled weather another good entry of 1068 couples for the bank holiday sale which included the prize sale of hoggs and lambs which was kindly sponsored by The British Wool Marketing Board and judged by Mr John Owen, Frochas. Results are as follows:

1st – 10 Texel x Hoggs with single Texel lambs from HC Davies, Ty Canol, Rhayader selling for £178.

2nd – 10 Suffolk x Hoggs with single Texel lambs from IC Goodwin & Son, Lower Esgair, Llanbadarn, sold to £187.

3rd – 11 Texel x Hoggs with single Beltex lambs from I & E Lloyd, Tyntwll, Nantyrhiw, sold for £155.

Hoggs hit £212 for a single coloured mule with Charollais lamb from E & SM Hughes, High Park Farm, who went on to sell two other coloured mules for £202. F Bailey, Pensarn, sold Texel hoggs with single lambs for £198 & £195 twice. H & S Watkins, Cammen Uchaf, sold 2 Beltex x hoggs with Beltex x lambs for £196.

J Lewis & Son, Penyffynon, sold Texel x hoggs with single  Texel x hoggs with single texel x lambs to £195. Best quality hoggs sold from £180 to £212, 2nd quality hoggs sold from £160 - £180 most others between £140 and £160.

The older ewes sold to a very good trade peaking at £215 for a pen of 5 texel 2 year old ewes with twin lambs from F Bailey, Pensarn, who also sold 6 Texel x 2 year old ewes with single lambs for £180.

EJ Lewis, Rhoslas, sold 2 beltex x 2 year old ewes with twin Beltex lambs for £190.

All couples averaged £137 per unit or £65 per life. 700 hoggs with lambs averged £155.

COWS & CALVES

A packed ringside at the weekly sale of cows and claves saw some spirited bidding for the 60 outfits on offer 23 lots over £2000. There were some fantastic cows and calves for sale and you would have to travel a long way to better the outfits on offer on Monday.

Leading the way was first time consigner MM & R Morris, Maestanyglwyden, with a fantastic British Blue x heifer with a show potential 2 month old Limousin heifer calf which sold for £3350. Other notable prices from Messrs Morris were £2200 & £2020 twice.

Guto Lewis, Sychlyn, Pool Quay, sold a British Blue x Limousin 1st calver with a show potential Limousin x bull calf for £3150 and following that into the ring  from the same home was a Pedigree Limousin heifer with her heifer calf which made £3120. From R B Jones, Llwynobin, was a Limousin x British Blue 2nd calver with a British Blue x heifer calf which made £2950 with further lots from Llwynobin at £2420 and £2200.

DP Evans, Moelygarth, Guilsfield, sold 6 Limousin x 1st calvers with Limousin x calves at foot to a top of £2520 to average £2283. With a Hereford x heifer and a Limousin heifer calf making £2020. J H  Roberts, Rolly, sold 5 British Blue 1st calvers with Limousin calves to a top of £2080 to average £1972.

WI Jones & Sons, Cilcwm Fawr, sold a Limousin x 1st calver with a Limousin bull calf for £2550.

A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £3000 + 3 lots, £2500 - £3000 3 lots, £2200 - £2500 7 lots, £2000 - £2200 10 lots, £1800- £2000 10 lots, £1600 - £1800 9 lots, £1400 - £1600 13 lots, £1200 - £1400 5 lots.
