The jobs boost Tesco is providing Welshpool has been revealed after it was confirmed that more than 100 of the 189 jobs available for the new store have been given to town residents.
The rest are believed to have been filled from the surrounding communities who are currently receiving final training ahead of the March 14 grand opening.
The supermarket giant’s multi-million pound development is taking shape on the site of the Old Smithfield and despite some hold-ups along the way which have delayed its opening, it seems to be all systems go.
The development will change the face of Welshpool forever. The new one-way system should go live early this week and following Phase One of the development, a Phase Two will include retail units with a view to tempting other major retail names to the town.
Mywelshpool heavily publicised the jobs drive and the store also recruited through Job Centre Plus which has also enabled 15 job seekers who had been out of work for six months or more to find employment.
The zero carbon new store will offer hot chicken, fresh fish and meat counters, indian and chinese takeaway dishes, a delicatessen and a bakery providing fresh products in store every day.
There will also be a wide selection of non-food ranges, including clothing, health and beauty, home entertainment, electricals, toys, stationery, homeware, cookware and a selection of mobile phones.
