Welshpool Livestock Sales report on Sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (22)

A tidy show of cull cattle yesterday saw a top of £1372.80 (176ppkg) for a Limousin OTM cow weighing 780kg from M & JE Jones & DCE & MN Davies, Cwm Farm. Also from the same home was another Limousin otm cow weighing 645kg making £1193.25 (185ppkg). H G Rees ltd, Hiriaeth, presented a 727kg Limousin otm cow making £1272.25 (175ppkg). Also from Mr Rees was a 10 year old Limousin Bull weighing in at 1091kg making £1669.23 (153ppkg). Younger cows topped at £1008.15 (143ppkg) for a 705kg Simmental from H M Powell & Son, Whitehouse. DW & SE Richards,Rhallt Farm, sold a 605kg Saler cow making £986.15 (163ppkg).

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (x10) 142.75ppkg / £949.87.

Cows 48-72 months (x7) 137.96ppkg / £864.40.

Heifers Under 48 months (x2) 113.03ppkg / £577.04.

Otm Bull (x1) 153ppkg / £1669.23.

Steers Under 48 months (x2) 158.23ppkg / £767.40.

Overall Average 140.97ppkg.

PRIME HOGGETS (3730)

An entry of 3730 prime hogget’s sold to a similar overall average of 209.ppkg.

Lights (761) to 216ppkg from R Meredith, Hollybush. Others to 214ppkg from J T Owen & Co, Upper Garth. Average of 183.09ppkg.

Standards (771) to 244ppkg & 233ppkgfrom CL & C Watkins, Bank Farm. Others to 230ppkg from JE Thomas, Graigwen . Average of 206.50ppkg.

Mediums (1436) to 251ppkg from R A Davies, Llwynderw. Others to 236ppkg from TE & TR Jerman, Cloddia Farm. Average of 219.75ppkg

Heavies (553) to 240ppkg  from H M Powell & Son, White House. Others to 235ppkg from AG & G Rowlands, Tynpant. Average of 216.18ppkg   

Over Weights (100) to 211ppkg from R A Davies, Llwynderw. Others to 208ppkg from D & S Jones, Brynglas. Average of 187.52ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2044)

An entry of 2044 culls yesterday saw averages of £50.95 for ewes and £62.65 for rams. Ewes peaked at £131 from DA & SJ Jones, Dyffryn. VT & SA Hamer, Trinnant, sold ewes to £120.Cull rams topped at £119 from TH Vaughan & son, Maes Mochnant Uchaf. The best quality ewes were on fire and in great demand.

STORE LAMBS

An improved entry of 600 store lambs selling to a slightly improved trade with the best quality keenly contested as the fat hogget price continues to average over 200ppkg. Theave lambs peaked at £76 for a mule from JM & JG Shearer, Cochsidan. With other theaves to £66.50 for 8 welsh and £62 and £60 for pens of Texel x. Mixed and clean lambs peaked at £75 for texels from R J Lewis, Nantygelli, with other texels to £69 and Suffolk  x to £68.50.  Wether lambs peaked at £64.50 from GW & WW Jones, Hill Farm. With other wether lambs to £63.50 and £61. Tup lambs stole the show with Texels from M & K Brown, Rock, to £76. Further tup lambs sold for £75, £73 and £72.50. Averages again including a large number of hardy hill bred lambs:

Mixed/Clean Lambs : £49.15,

Theave Lambs : £45.42,

Tup lambs : £54.01,

Wether Lambs : £57.61,

Overall average of £50.07.

Sale of store lambs to commence at 10.30 am prompt next week.

CADE LAMBS

An entry of 32 cade lambs selling to £25 with others to £22 x4, £21 and £19. Averaging £14.56.

COUPLES

Absolutely flying trade for the 93 ewes with lambs that were on offer with the best – 4 texel full mouth/ as found ewes with twin beltex x lambs from MM & R Morris, Maestanyglwyden, hitting £208 TWICE! Other twins from the same home sold to £200, £192 and £190. Texel x full mouth/ as found ewes with single beltex lambs selling for £162, £160 and £135, with the whole run averaging £67/ life.

GTW Andrew, Bwlch, presented as found mules with twin lambs selling to £182 and others to £165 x4.

TM Davies, Wynnstay Farm, sold 3 Suffolk x 4 year old/ full mouth ewes with 6 texel x lambs for £182 with others to £180 and as found ewes with twins to £157.

Further entries of couples expected next week including more outfits from MM & R Morris, Maestanyglwyden.

Next catalogued sale to be held Monday 5th March.

IN-LAMB EWES

A large entry of 763 in lamb ewes with included a large consignment of 656 draft ewes in flock ages removed from Tyn Twll, Llanfyllin, which included lots of welsh, texel x and lleyn x ewes scanned in-lamb to Texel, lleyn or charollais rams due end of march onwards, sold to £72 with others to £67, £65 x2 and £62 with the whole run averaging £51.

4 blue texel x yearling ewes scanned carrying 2 singles, 1 twin and 1 triplet to a blue texel ram made £140 from R M Jones, Tanyffridd, with 5 others from the same home selling to £135.

JE Owen & Co, Gilfach, sold 26 full mouth mules scanned carrying twins sold for £100. 45 big strong texel hoggs from JT & AW Davies, Tynygraig, scanned to a Texel ram carrying a mixture of singles and twins sold for £100.

FODDER SALE

Our first produce sale was held yesterday (Monday 19th February), A great turnout of willing buyers showed up. To start the sale an entry of 2016 round bale silage achieved £19 per bale, 2017 Round bale silage achieved an average of £22. An entry of Square Bale Hay sold on the lorry, made £125 a tonne.  300 small bale hay, cattle and sheep quality achieved an average of £3.40 per bale. Straw sold very well, 160 small square bale barley straw (4 stringers) sold at a price of £21 a bale, equivalent to approximately £136 per tonne.  Wheat straw was also in high demand selling to £129 per tonne.  Our next sale of produce will be held on the 5th of March 2018, Entries are now being taken.  For more information contact Joe Powell on 07505524943.

COWS & CALVES

G S Mathis, Buarth Yr Oen, sold 2 pedigree Limousin 1st calvers 1 with a Pedigree Limousin heifer calf the other with a pure bred Limousin steer calf selling for £3250 and £3100 respectively.
