Welshpool Livestock Sales reports on its sale Sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (34)

A few less otm about – still in strong demant. Topping the otm cow section at £1224.72 (168ppkg) was a 729kg Charolais from Roberts & Jones, Parc. Next top in the otm cows was for a 743kg cow making £1099.64 (148ppkg) from G Jones & Son, Yr Ogof. Otm bulls topped at £1447.20 (144ppkg) for a 1005kg Charolais from J R Evans, Brynderwen. Younger cows topped at £1192.60 (168ppkg) for a 710kg cow from R J Kinsey & Son, Red House. Heifers under 48months topped at £1337.40 (180ppkg) for a 743kg Limousin from M & JE Jones & DCE & MN Davies, Cwm Farm.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (x27)  127.53ppkg / £773.63.

Cows 48-72 months (x2) 148.78ppkg / £1041.45.

Heifers Under 48 months (x3) 158.21ppkg / £942.93.

Otm Bull (x2) 135.28ppkg / £1395.43.

Overall Average 132.18ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (3210)

An entry of 3210 spring lambs sold to an overall average of 259.87ppkg.

Lights (303) to 259ppkg from RW & B Hughes, Gelli Farm. Others to 258ppkg from L B Owen , Garth Vaughan. Average of  239.96ppkg.

Standards (906) to 319ppkg & 312ppkg from MM & R Morris, Maestanyglwyden. Others to 311ppkg from A L Davies, Ty Brith.  Average of 254.26ppkg.

Mediums (1874) to 318ppkg & 313ppkg from JR, RM & JP Andrew, Bronheulog. Others to 310ppkg from L Harding, Swn Y Gwynt. Average of  264.58ppkg.

Heavies (107) to 304ppkg from MM & R Morris, Maestanyglwyden. Others to 274ppkg from C W Eynon, Blaen Dyffryn. Average of 252.62ppkg.

PRIME HOGGETS (1323)

An entry of 1323 prime hogget’s sold to an overall average of  194.67ppkg.

Lights (63) to 210ppkg from HP & MM Lloyd, Gilfachau.  Others to 198ppkg from W Beamond, Cwmcarnedd. Average of 191.69ppkg.

Standards (323) to 230ppkg from CJ & LM Davies Ltd, Lawn Farm. Others to 208ppkg from W Beamond, Cwmcarnedd. Average of 187.95ppkg.

Mediums (364) to 226ppkg from CJ & LM Davies, Lawn Farm. Others to 220ppkg J D Edwards & Son, Heath Farm. Average of 200.16ppkg

Heavies (168) to 228ppkg  from DWP Griffiths, Park Lodge. Others to 223ppkg from CJ & LM Davies, Lawn Farm. Average of 199.23ppkg   

Over Weights (33) to 202ppkg from E Davies & Co, Red House Farm. Others to 190ppkg from C T Roberts & Son, Three Gates Farm.   Average of 186.26ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2975)

An extraordinary trade on cull ewes was seen, an entry of 2886 ewes averaged a staggering £78.04 this was up £18 on last weeks average. Ewes peaked at a whopping £150 presented by J Meddins and co, Lynwood, Churchstoke, Montgomery. EH Pennie and son, Gwern-yr-ychain, llandyssil, Powys showed a tremendous run of texel cross ewes, with their tops lots reaching £128.50. 30% of lots entered achieved over £100. Demand was fierce on all types, well meated mules easily achieved over £100, Improved welsh were often in the high £70s and poor  meated ewes were also in great demand. Overall a fantastic trade across the board on both cull ewes and cull rams.

COUPLES

An entry of 290 couples broken down as 79 older ewes and 211 hoggs with lambs again sold to a very good trade. Top price peaked at £228 for 2 suffolk x 2 year old ewes with twins from F Bailey, pensarn, with other ewes from the same home selling to 3212 and £210. other highlights saw J V Davies & Co, Garth Fawr, sell a two year old mule with twin lambs realise £220.

Hoggs & Lambs sold to a very good trade with the best texels hitting £208 and £206 from F Bailey, Pensarn. Others from J Lewis & Son, Penyffynon, hit £205, £200 and £198. The best mules on offer were presented by J V Davies & Co,Garth Fawr, realised £202 for a run of 22.

Overall average of £159/ unit or £74.32 a life. All hoggs & Lambs averaged £170.38 per couple or £85.19 a Last catalogued sale of couples for 2018 next week (Monday 11th June) with an expected entry in excess of 350. Sale at 11am.

COWS & CALVES

another good entry of 41 cows and calves met with a sound trade again with some quality outfits on offer. Topping the trade this week at £2510 was a Limousin x 1st calver with her heifer calf presented by DP & RE Evans, Moelygarth. From the same home was a Blonde x 1st calver with a Limousin x bull calf at £2380 with another outfit at £2340. The 9 forward from Moelygarth averaged £2138.

The highest priced outfit this week from RE & CJ Davies, Boycott Hall, was £2500 for a Limousin x 1st calver and heifer calf. Closely followed at £2450 by a Limouisn x 1st calver with a bull calf. Messrs Davies' 5 outfits averaged £2102.

Presented by T S Morgan, Glanhafon Bach, was a British Blue x 1st calver with her Limousin bull calf which sold for £2080. A & MH Worthington, Castell, Sold 2 British Blue x 1st calvers one with a Lim x bull calf and the other with a Lim x heifer calf for £2130 and £1900 respectively.

I P Jones, Ddol Fawr, sold 5 Limousin x 1st calvers with Limousin calves at foor to a top of £2200 to average £1956. F J Owens & Co, Llettygynfach, sold 6 Blonde x cows with Blonde x calves to a top of £1850 to average £1700.

A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £2400 3 lots, £2000-£2400 3 lots, £2000 - £2200 8 lots, £1800 - £2000 8 lots, £1600 - £1800 9 lots, £1400 - £1600 3 lots, £1200 - £1400 3 lots, £1000 - £1200 2 lots, < £1000 2 lots.
