Welshpool Livestock Sales reports on its sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (18)

An entry of 10 OTMs this week saw a top price of £1666.56 (186ppkg) for a Charolais x OTM weighing in at 896kg from Roberts & Jones, Parc,  D R Owen & Sons, Sandilands also had top price with 174ppkg for a 770kg Limousin x OTM making £1339.80. Younger cows (48-72months) topped at £823.08 (114ppkg) for a British Blue x weighing 722kg from G A Thomas, Penllain. R J Kinsey & Son, Red House  also had a top price of 135ppkg for a 666kg Stabiliser x making £772.56. Heifers under 48 months topped at £1209.90 (185ppkg) for a Limousin x heifer weighing 654kg from D R Owen & Sons, Sandilands.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (10) 136.60ppkg / £987.73.

Cows 48-72 months (3) 117.59ppkg / £767.07.

Heifers Under 48 months (3) 167.13ppkg / £1081.31.

Overall Average 137.12ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (3418)

An entry of spring lambs sold to an overall average of 172.77ppkg.

Lights (837) to 195ppkg from L B Owen, Garth Vaughan. Others to 191ppkg from Red House Farm, Aberhafesp. Average of 172.37ppkg.

Standards (1622) to 196ppkg from S Smith, Pentre Farm Cottage. Others to 193ppkg from W R B Jones, Brynawelon.  Average of 173.92ppkg.

Mediums (564) to 183ppkg from E J & A J Roberts, Longlands and also from T H Vaughan & Son, Maes Mochnant Uchaf. Average of 173.59ppkg.

Heavies (96) to 171ppkg from D R Oliver & Son, Tirdu. Others to 168ppkg from M D Williams, Pencoed. Average of 163ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1854)

A reduced entry of 1854 ewes achieving an average of £51.42 up £3 on last week’s average. Trade was very strong on well fleshed/muscled ewes. Texel ewes were up to £120 presented by C L & C Watkins, Bank Farm. J S & A Howells, Shadog Farm, as usual presented a pen of excellent texel ewes achieving £118. Plenty of mule ewes were in the high 80's once again, smaller well fleshed ewes were still selling well. Poorer ewes lacking flesh were hard work. Overall trade was sharper on well fleshed ewes.

STORE CATTLE (80)

There was a seasonal entry of 80 store cattle at the end of July sale. The trade was a little less in reflection of the weather and grass situation, nevertheless it was no worse than expected and demand was still strong for quality with some notable prices achieved as follows;

Overall Steers averaged £975.16 per head or 202.41ppkg and heifers averaged £838.11 per head or 186.68ppkg.

BREEDING EWES (610)

The First Sale of the 2018 season saw 610 ewes pass through Ring 4 under the watch of a large crowd that were cautious in their bidding due to the current climate and fodder situation.

Despite this the best ewes were keenly contested resulting in 10 Texel yearlings from J L Morgan, Tynllwyn hitting £182 with other Texels from the same home realising £130, £128 & £125 twice. With Suffolk x yearlings from Messrs Morgan hit £154 twice.

New vendor N L Pugh & Co, Longville presented 30 Texel x yearlings sold in 3 lots that reached £160, £156 & £155.

Local vendor A H Jones & Son, Hirrhyd brought the first of their annual consignment of Suffolk x yearlings that sold for £152 & £145.

The best older ewes were also keenly sought after with 20 full mouth Suffolk x from Messrs Hockenhull hitting £127 & £106. 10 full mouth Texel x ewes from C D Jones, Bedol hit £100 and the best as found ewes peaked at £93 once again for a bunch of Texel x.

Sale of Breeding Ewes to commence at 11.30am next Monday, with the next catologued sale on 13th August – entries close 6th August.

STORE LAMBS (156)

A small seasonal entry of 156 store lambs for the first sale of the new season saw a rather boyant trade despite the current prices being achieved for fat lambs.

7 Mule tup lambs from F R Williams, Cefn Canol took top price selling for £55.50 with another 12 from the same home hitting £55.

Mixed and clean lambs reached £54.50 from P Robinson, Upper Trefnant for 10 Mules, with 10 Texels from the same home also realising £54.50.

Theave lambs peaked at £45.50 for 9 Texels from C E Williams, Rhoslefain Farm.
