Welshpool Livestock Sales report on its weekly sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (17)

An entry of 17 OTMs this week saw a top price of £1646.93 (157ppkg) for a Charolais x OTM weighing in at 1049kg from Roberts & Jones, Parc. I & DW Davies, Gwern Y Bwlch reached 161ppkg for a 779kg Limousin x OTM making £1254.19. Younger cows (48-72months) topped a £1282.56 (167ppkg) for a British Blue x weighing 768kg from IL & AJ Powell, Lower Cwmydalfa. I & DW Davies, Gwern Y Bwlch also had a top price of 157ppkg for a 662kg Limousin x making £1039.34. Heifers under 48 months topped at £783.96 (139ppkg) for a Limousin x heifer weighing 564kg from JE & JT Evans & Son, Upper Cefn Penarth. W C Jones, Tymawr also reached 114ppkg for a Charolais x heifer weighing 548kg.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (10) 125.60ppkg / £869.05.

Cows 48-72 Months (5) 145.50ppkg / £941.10.

Heifers Under 48 months (2) 126.68ppkg / £704.34.

Overall Average 131.24ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (5106)

A larger than anticipated entry of 5106 prime lambs sold to an overall average of 175.84ppkg, which would be in line with other local Monday markets. In most demand were the better meated and heavier weighted lambs, with the better shaped types selling to 200ppkg and above. In less demand were the lighter weight (30-38 kilo lambs), especially the leaner less finished types. Any better meated lambs of this weight continue to find a good competitive trade.

Lights (1157) to 206ppkg from C J Davies & Son, Waengwyn. Others to 197ppkg from D R Owen & Sons, Sandilands Farm. Average of 169.51ppkg.

Standards (2357) to 212ppkg from M H Pugh, Gilfach. Others to 210ppkg from M J Williams, Pontyperson.  Average of 179.07ppkg.

Mediums (1078) to 210ppkg from T H Vaughan & Son, Maes Mochnant Uchaf, who also reached 203ppkg for 48.50kg lambs. Average of 181.40ppkg.

Heavies (155) to 190ppkg from G Bound & Son, Cefn Bach. Others to 183ppkg from T & B Williams, Cilmawr. Average of 171.10ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2010)

A larger entry of 2010 ewes achieved an entry of £45.80. This was up £5 on last weeks entry. Ewes peaked at £136 presented by PL, JS & A Howells, Tycam, closely followed by ewes presented by D Williams, Cefn Briw. Overall well fleshed ewes sold very well. Demand was present for grazing type ewes.

Cull Rams topped £140 presented by PL, JS & A Howells, Tycam, closely followed by D W Davies, Penybank making £122.

Overall a much sharper trade which was firm throughout the sale, a shortage of ewes was met with a strong demand from buyers.

COWS & CALVES

An entry of 26 Cows and Calves met with a steady trade at the sale on 3rd September. Even though the rain has arrived and here is a little more grass around there is still a concern as to how the winter fodder will last! An entry of 5 Beef Shorthorn 1st Calvers with Limousin x calves at foot presented by G J & F J Edwards, Llyswen Farm sold to a top pf £1440 to average £1325.

Presented by F J Owen & Co, Lletygynfach was a Welsh Black x Blonde cow with a Blonde d'Aquitaine heifer calf which made £1380 with a similar outfit making £1350. L H Lomas & Son, Manor Farm sold a British Blue x Limousin Cow with a Limousin bull calf for £1320.

Mr W J Hodges, Broadway Hall sold 8 Pedigree Hereford Cows with Hereford calves at foot to a top of £1260 with others leading prices at £1140 and £1130. Overall the 8 outfits averaged £1040.

A breakdown of all prices achived were as follows:-

£1400+ 1 Lot, £1300 - £1400 5 Lots, £1200 - £1300 4 Lots, £1000 - £1200 5 Lots, <£1000 7 Lots

BREEDING EWES

An entry of 995 ewes met with a much stickier trade as poorer, plainer yearlings proved very difficult, although the trade on the best quality was still evident.

Texels were in more demand than in recent weeks taking top price at £168 from entries from R M Evans, New House. Others from R D Bowen, Glanrhyd also proved popular selling for £158. Best Mules to £158 from J F Woosnam & Sons, Eisteddle  and Suffolks to £152 from G Morgan, Cae Garreg.

2 year olds ewes peaked at £152 for a Pure Bred Texel from M R M Matthews, Tanyfron with Beltex x ewes from E L Evans, Derlwyn selling to £125.

A large number of flock ewes entered an part of a reduction and disperal sale reached £108 for Texels from W K Davies, Offas Way and £100 from P R Davies, Lower Penarron.

2 Year Olds - £90

3 Year Olds - £87

Full Mouth - £77

As Found - £78

STORE LAMBS

Again a similar entry to last week with prices topping at £69.50 for Beltex x Tups from M M & R Morris, Maestanyglwyden.

Mixed and Clean lambs hit £52.50 for Texels from S Lane, New Hall with others to £51.50 from W T, G O & A E Davies, Ty Gwyn Farm.

Ram Lambs hits £69.50 from M M & R Morris, Maestanyglwyden with other to £61 from R W Roberts, Hillfield.

Wether lambs sold to £54 from F A Lloyd, Graiglas with others to £50 from the same home.

Ewe lambs reached £60 for Texels from E J & M E Davies, Coedprydfydau with others to £53 from F R Williams, Cefncanol.
