Welshpool Livestock Sales report on Sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (31)

A similar number of OTM cattle on offer sold to a strong competitive trade throughout for all grades and weights of cattle to return an overall average of nearly 135ppkg. Today's top prices 168ppkg and £1224 per head with plenty of others over 150ppkg. Hopefully with the end of the school holidays and the cooler weather trade will lift in the near future.

This week saw a top price of £1224.30 (159ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 770kg from DT & ME & ML Jones, Gelli Farm. C Carter, Moelwylim reached 164ppkg for a 642kg Limousin x OTM making £1052.88. Younger cows (48-72months) topped a £1033.20 (168ppkg) for a British Blue x weighing 615kg from EG & AW Pugh, Cefn.  A Rowlands, Penygelli reached 138ppkg for a 635kg Limousin x making £876.30. Heifers under 48 months topped at £934.58 (166ppkg) for a Limousin x heifer weighing 563kg.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (25) 131.34ppkg / £844.07.

Cows 48-72 Months (3) 145.39ppkg / £915.97.

Heifers Under 48 months (3) 166ppkg / £934.58.

Overall Average 134.77ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (4850)

A good number of lambs forward sold to a slightly slower trade throughout at price levels similar to market prices late last week. This resuled in an overall average of 168.5ppkg. Again well meated lambs of any weight, were in most demand with any leaner types being more difficult to sell.

Lights (1120) to 200ppkg from Ellis Lloyd & Co, Garthiaen. The same home also reached 194ppkg. Average of 165.32ppkg.

Standards (2123) to 205ppkg from Red House Farm, Aberhafesp. The same home also reached 199ppkg.  Average of 171.90ppkg.

Mediums (1014) to 194ppkg from I E Roberts & Son, Maesdyfnant, Others to 183ppkg from T H Vaughan & Son, Maes Mochnant Uchaf. Average of 170.21ppkg.

Heavies (88) to 176ppkg from BE & BE Langford, Lletymeibion. Others to 175ppkg from T H Vaughan & Son, Maes Mochnant Uchaf . Average of 165.37ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2949)

An entry of 2949 culls achieved an average of £43.52, down £4 on last week. Trade was slighty steadier compared to the previous week. Well fleshed continential ewes were again in demand, Texels achieved up to £129 presented by D J Lloyd & Co, Cefnbarrach.  A pen of 5 presented by Red House Farm, Aberhafesp sold to £128. Well fleshed Mules achieved £87, unfleshed Welsh ewes were hardest sold, however a good presence from grazing buyers was seen. Cull Rams topped £125 presented by K E Griffiths, Hen Felin, closely followed by Red House Farm, Aberhafesp selling to £118. Overall a steady trade.

STORE CATTLE

With a good entry of 250 cattle at the September sale, buyer were present from across England and Wales for the very good quality cattle on offer. Despite the dry summer conditions it was evident from the cattle forward that they had not been badly affected and that the buyers must have the necessary fodder available.

With the bullocks averaging 213.6ppkg and heifers 206.6ppkg. The top prices realised were:

£1225 for a pair of Charolais bullocks from Tynybryn Farms, Tregynon. With heifers achieving £1305 for a Charolais x from G Bound, Cefn Bach.

The highest pence per kilo cattle were J S Abel, Hendre-Aur reaching 252.5ppkg for Charolais x bullocks and G Bound & Son, Cefn Bach reaching 303.5ppkg for a Charolais x heifer.

BREEDING EWES

1400 ewes hit ring 4 with the best-selling to a brisk trade. It is clear the buyers are after quality and the bottom end ewes proved incredibly difficult.

Suffolk x yearling ewes proved most popular reaching £170 from T E P Jones & Son, Old House with others from the same home selling to£158.

Best Texel x yearling ewes reached £161 for 18 from W P Owen, Cefn Uchaf with others from the same home to £158.

Yearling Mules topped at £149 from P Davies, Lawnt Isaf with others to £148 from A Breese & Co, Upper Fachwen.

Again a large number of flock age ewes were on offer due to a number of ongoing flock disperals with the best, 20 Suffolk x 3 year old ewes reaching £131 from P F Davies, Lower Penarron, with 20 Texel 3 year olds from the same home selling for £125.

Full Mouth - £68

STORE LAMBS

A similar entry with the lambs on offer being a better show than in previous weeks, hit a high of £67.50.

A smaller entry of ewe lambs hit £61 for Beltex x from M M & R Morris, Maestonyglwyden with others to £59 from the same home.

Ram lambs peaked at £67.50 for 8 Beltex x from Mrs J Morgan, Lower Brynbedw with others to £60.50 for Texels from B E Thomas, Blaen Y Cwm.

Mixed and clean lambs hit £65 for 6 Charollais from E J Emerson, Cwm Colebatch with others to £62 from the same home.
