Welshpool Livestock Sales report on their busy sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (46)

A larger number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £1071.36(144ppkg) for a British Blue x OTM weighing in at 744kg from J A Jandrell, Llettyderyn. A Limousin OTM bull weighing 992kg from Tynybryn Farms, Tynybryn reached £1240 (125ppkg). Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £1448.18 (206ppkg) for a British Blue x weighing 703kg from Tynybryn Farms, Tynybryn. Heifers under 48 months topped at £928.20 (156ppkg) for a Salers x heifer weighing 595kg from DW & SE Richards, Rhallt Farm.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (28) 99.17ppkg / £640.26.

OTM Bull (3) 122.79ppkg / £1083.38.

Cows 48-72 Months (8) 129.48ppkg / £825.25.

Heifers Under 48 months (7) 123.38ppkg / £666.94.

Overall Average 109.60ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (4053)

Similar number of lambs forward sold to an average of 177.28ppkg with a top price of 211ppkg for 42kg lambs making £88.50. This shows a increase in average of 10ppkg on last week. All weights and grades of lambs sold to a sharper trade with competitive bidding throughout. Again in most demand was the better quality, better meated (but not fat) lambs. Leaner smaller weight lambs also sold to a stronger trade due to the demand of store lamb buyers. Hopefully demand for lamb will continue to increase as winter progresses.

Lights (338) to 190ppkg from DW Davies & Co, Peniarth. Others to 182ppkg from DG & SA Rees & Meibion, Castell Y Gellanarth. Average of 159.23ppkg.

Standards (1081) to 197ppkg from H Hughes & Son, Hendy. Others to 190ppkg from A Williams, Tynllan and Bowen & Bowen, Penthryn. Average of 175.17ppkg.

Mediums (1673) to 211ppkg from I E Roberts & Son, Maesdyfnant. Others to 204ppkg from D R Owen & Sons, Sandilands. Average of 181.03ppkg.

Heavies (719) to 195ppkg from TE Davies, Birchen House. Others to 194ppkg from T K Robinson, Tynewydd. Average of 167.68ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1927)

A slightly reduced entry of 1832 cull ewes achieved an average of £39.53. This was slightly up on last week by £2. A large show of Welsh type ewes were present. Today saw a shortage of larger well fleshed ewes. Ewes peaked at £98 presented by R Richard & Co, Maenllengen. Closely followed by HM Powell & Son, Whitehouse, with ewes to £94.

Overall trade was very much same, smaller unfleshed ewes were hard sold whilst Welsh fleshed ewes were still very much in demand.

STORE LAMBS (1300)

1300 Store lambs sold at today’s sale.

Tup lambs topped at £79 from NG & GG Davies, Trawsgelli.

Mixed and clean sold to £69 from EJ & GM Trickley, Moat Farm.

Wether lambs peaked at £70 from HJ Marsh & Sons, Stokesay.

Theave lambs peaked at £67 for stock from DM & RC Rees, Dugwm Farm.
