Welshpool Livestock Sales report on the sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (39)

A larger number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £885 (118ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 750kg from C Woosnam & TA Mathias, Forest. RLG Edwards, Trewylan Dairy made 123ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 688kg making £846.24. Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £990.60 (127ppkg) for an Aberdeen Angus x weighing 780kg from E & H Chapman, Morfodion. Heifers under 48 months topped at £995.40 (158ppkg) for a heifer weighing 630kg from TH & ME & EJ Jones, Plas Coch.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (27) 101.60ppkg / £682.24

Cows 48-72 Months (5) 104.88ppkg / £626.14

Heifers Under 48 months (6) 143.99ppkg / £869.93

Bulls Under 72 months (1) 113ppkg / £701.73

Overall Average 108.32ppkg.

The auctioneers recommend that as many cows as possible shown in the cull cow section are TB Tested.

PRIME HOGGETS (3009)

A reduced seasonal entry of hoggets forward sold to a very strong trade to return an average of 203.05ppkg, with a top price of 232ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 38kg hoggets making £88 from TK Robinson, Tynewydd, and £112/head for 57kg hoggets from TK Robinson, Tynewydd.

Despite a few less numbers forward trade exceeded last weeks average with competitive bidding on all weights with export weight hoggs (39-44kg) averaging 207.78ppkg. Heavier hoggs again sold well with numerous pens over the £100 barrier.

Mid weight lambs (32-39kg) continue to be in the high demand returning an overall average of 204.11ppkg.

Lights (365) to 203ppkg from TD Evans & Co, Maesmochnant. Others to 198ppkg from RA Roberts, Pennant. Average of 178.65ppkg.

Standards (954) to 232ppkg from TK Robinson, Tynewydd. Others to 228ppkg from EW Jones, Tytanyfoel. Average of 204.39ppkg.

Mediums (1068) to 229ppkg from IE Roberts & Son, Maesdyfnant. Others to 228ppkg from EW Jones, Tytanyfoel.  Average of 207.73ppkg.

Heavies (479) to 215ppkg from EB Ellis, Penisarcwm and EB Ellis, Penisarcwm. Others to 213ppkg from EW Jones, Tytanyfoel and MRM Matthews, Tanyfron. Average of 191.07ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1918)

Today, saw a slightly reduced entry of 1816 cull ewes. Trade was strong throughout, again smaller ewes were very much in demand small welsh making well into the £40’s, with well fleshed Cheviot ewes achieving up to £67. Ewes peaked at £130 for excellent ewes presented by SJ Smith, Penybryn. F & MJ Williams, Cefnguigy Fach also presented a fantastic pen of ewes achieving £130.

Overall all types of ewes were in strong demand. The ewes this week averaged £50, this was down £2 on the week but the strength of ewes forward today were slightly smaller.

STORE LAMBS (516)

A reduced number of Store lambs were forward at today’s sale, but the quality remained, with some of the dearest trade of the season.

Topping the sale at £82 were a pen of 6 Texel x tups from MRM Matthews, Tanyfron. With others from DA & SJ Jones, Dyffryn reaching £73 for a pen of Texel x’s.

Dominating this week’s store lambs were the theave’s which made up nearly half of the overall entries. They saw a maximum price of £79 for a pen of 3 Mules from the sellers GO Jones & JA Lewis, Wern Farm. With others to £76 from JM & MG Oliver, Cilcewydd Farm.

There were a high number of mixed and clean lambs peaking at £80 from JE Roberts Watkins, Creigfryn for a pen of 2 Mules. With other mixed and clean lambs reaching £77 from AM Jones, Middle Farm.

Wether lambs saw a strong price of £75 for a Suffolk from LS Philpott & Son, Birch Tree Cottage. With others peaking at £70 from GA & ME Birchall & Son, Penylanucha.

The overall average saw an increase from the previous week at £58.83 with the section averages being as follows;

Averages:

Ewe Lambs - £58.42

Mixed & Clean - £58.47

Wether lambs - £56.36

Ram lambs - £58.40

IN LAMB EWES (343)

This week saw the first sale of in lamb breeding ewes of the year with an entry of 283.

The section peaked at a very good price of £170 for a pen of 10 quality Mule yearlings from the seller DW & JM Meredith, Maesteg. The Meredith’s had quality throughout with another of their pens also reaching £170 for another pen of 10 Mule yearlings.

The two year old in lamb breeding ewes saw a maximum price of £118 for a pen of 4 Texels from RM Jones, Tanyffridd with others to £95 for a pen of 21 from GW Watkin, Henllys.

Three year olds topped at £143 for a pen of 24 Mules from GW Watkin, Henllys with others from BL Griffiths, Lower Pengelli reaching £130 for a pen of 10 Texels.

The standard of full mouth ewes was high with a pen of 15 Texels reaching £140 from GW Watkin, Henllys with others peaking at £135 for 5 Mules from ED & MJ Jones, Gelli.

As found ewes topped at £80 for a pen of 5 Mules from RW & SA Hughes with a pen of 2 Suffolks reaching £60 from GW Watkin, Henllys.

Overall average £113.02

BEULAH DISPERSAL SALE

Ring two saw an end of an era as Messrs Hughes, High Park Farm dispersed their highly renowned flock of Registered Beulah Ewes and with it the end of a 34 year affair of selling Welsh Mule Ewe Lambs at Welshpool, which had seen numerous champion pens and progeny that has taken the ‘Champion Mule’ title at the Royal Welsh Show and a number of occasions.

Scanned at 206% to a Blue Faced Leicester Ram that had sired the Champion mule ewe lambs at Welshpool’s 2018 mule sale. It was clear the bloodlines were in high demand on a packed sale ring saw purchasers from as far as Staffordshire.

The first lot through the ring a pair of 2 year olds carrying 1 twin and 1 single took the day’s top price of £500 selling to Messrs Jones, Ty Mawr, other 2 year old ewes sold to £430 and £370.

Lot 6, 4 three year old ewes carrying 2 twins and 2 triplets sold to £70 again to Messrs Jones, Ty Mawr. With further 3 year old ewes selling to £310 and £270.

Full mouth ewes peaked at £205 for the last lot of the day, 5 ewes all carrying twins which found a new home at AM Jones, Middle Farm other full mouth ewes sold to £180 and £155.

FODDER SALE

Our January Fodder sale saw a large entry of predominantly Hay with a large and keen crowd of bidders. Hay was sold to a premium.

Round bale hay sold to £47.50.

Square bale hay 8ft x 4ft sold to £26.

Heston bale hay sold to £65.

Conventional bale hay sold to £4.70.

Round bale haylage sold to £30.
