Welshpool Livestock Sales report on the sale at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday.

OTMS (25)

A similar number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £1127.91 (131ppkg) for a British Blue x OTM weighing in at 861kg from JE & DW Rogers, Red House. JJ Thomas & Son, Penybanc made 140ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 764kg making £1069.60. Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £1276.08 (156ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 818kg from CV & EM Lewis, Buttington New Hall.  DT & ME & ML Jones, Gelli Farm made 159ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 703kg making £1110.74. Heifers under 48 months topped at £910.20 (148ppkg) for a heifer weighing 615kg from DT & ME & ML Jones, Gelli Farm.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (13) 117.61ppkg / £794.11

Cows 48-72 Months (6) 148.85ppkg / £1069.27

Heifers Under 48 months (3) 134.02ppkg / £750.53

Bull Under 72 months (1) 109ppkg / £1340.70

Steer Under 48 months (1) 120ppkg / £927.60

Overall Average 126.58ppkg.

PRIME HOGGETS (2819)

A similar entry of hoggets forward sold to return an average of 198.82ppkg, with a top price of 224ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 34kg hoggets making £76 from JT Lewis, Trawscoed, and £99.50/head for 80kg hoggets from RA George, Penybank.

Hoggets sold today to a mixed trade with strong competitive bidding for any lambs under 40kg with these returning an average of 206ppkg. These was undoubtably due to the small numbers of hoggets forward in this weight bracket. Middle weight hoggs sold to a strong price for the better quality types with less demand for the 45-48kg hoggs. Heavier weight hoggs sold to a similar trade to last week.

Lights (140) to 219ppkg from EJ & AJ Roberts, Longlands. Others to 210ppkg from C Wildig, Bretchel Farm. Average of 203.51ppkg.

Standards (394) to 224ppkg from JT Lewis, Trawscoed. Others to 222ppkg from DW Roberts, Cefnyfedw. Average of 206.09ppkg.

Mediums (1114) to 217ppkg from GO & JA Jones, Wern Farm. Others to 216ppkg from DW & L Jones, Arbennig.  Average of 196.2ppkg.

Heavies (783) to 209ppkg from Lythwood Farm. Others to 200ppkg from RS Bebb, Robins Nest. Average of 178.17ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1878)

This week we saw a very similar entry of 1810 cull ewes that sold to an improved trade once again. 50% of the ewes forward this week were hill ewes and sold terrifically well from start to finish with the best Welsh/Speckled ewes realising £70. There was plenty of competition throughout from the 12 individual cull buyers present, this was reflected in the very pleasing average of £59.41. This week, we saw a shortage of the best meated and heaviest Texel/Suffolk ewes in comparison to recent weeks, but the ones forward sold to a strong trade with the best Texel ewes reaching £128, Charollais to £110 and Suffolk x to £109. Top price of the day of £128 went to AS Hopley for a pen of Texel ewes, closely followed by DTA Williams, Upper Bolbro that sold ewes at £126. More ewes are required each week to satisfy demand. Cull rams topped at £100 presented by JC Davies & Son, Gelli Gethin closely followed by three vendors at £90.

STORE HOGGETS (55)

A seasonal entry of store lambs sold to £67 for Suffolk theaves from G Price, Hafod. Mixed and clean lambs peaked at £66.50 from GW Jones, Henfryn.

Wether lambs hit £50.50 from DH Williams & Sons, Maes Y Criau with tup lambs from the same home selling to £55.50.

IN LAMB HOGGS/ EWES

An entry of 194 in lamb ewes and hoggs as part of two special entries sold to a bouyant trade with Texel x hoggs from TM Davies, Wynnstay Farm peaked at £137 with Suffolk x hoggs reaching £120, the consignment of 74 sold to an average of £124.08.

The second entry of 120 Welsh full mouth ewes from Messrs DR Thomas, Ffynonon Dderw sold to £47 with the run averaging £44.62.

COUPLES

A similar entry of couples again sold to a decent trade with a few more onlookers and purchasers that saw trade hit £210 for an aged Mule with twin lambs from GW Watkin, Henllys. Mr Watkin presented 41 lives that averaged £81.22 a life.

B Jones, Springbank sold full mouth ewes with singles to £128 and twins to £180.

J Tudor, Bryn Awel sold Texels with twins to £170 and DC Gittins, Giants Bank sold ewes with singles to £108.

Outfits averaged £118 or £51.56 a life.

CADE LAMBS

An entry of 47 cade lambs peaked at £20 from DS Jones & Co, Fronheulog and averaged £14.47

COWS & CALVES

A seasonal March entry of 3 cows and calves met with a steady trade. A Limousin x 2nd calver with a Limousin x bull calf at foot sold to £1200, presented by RW & JL Edwards, Tyntwll.

Two Pedigree Dexter cows, one with a bull and one with a heifer sold at £360 and £350 presented by E Griffiths, Castell Gwynfryn.
