PRIME LAMBS (1538)

A larger entry of lambs forward sold to a very strong trade to return an average of 250.58ppkg, with a top price of 289ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 36kg making £104 from IP Jones, Bryn Clochydd, and £114.50/head for 46kg lambs from BH Evans & Son, Rowton Grange.

Double the number of lambs forward didnt effect the price with a strong demand for all weights and grades. Best sold on the day were the 38-42kg well meated lambs which found competitve bidding throughout. Meated lambs of any weight sold well with the exception being heavier weight lambs (over 45kg), which were selling between 200-230ppkg. Smaller lambs 30-35kg also found a strong trade so vendors are encouraged to draw and sell their lambs early, especially when well fleshed.

A large bank holiday entry of mostly good quality, fed hoggets sold to a very similar trade to last week with most demand for the better quality well meated hoggs. Heavier weight hoggs sold to a firmier trade throughout with only the 60kg plus being difficult to sell. Middle range export weight hoggs sold to a competitve trade escpecially the better bred types. Smaller 30-40kg hoggs continue to sell very strongly, with more of these types on offer, but numbers not effecting the demand.
