Report on the sale at Rhayader Market on Thursday, July 11.

We are pleased to report a successful first sale for Rhayader Livestock Sales. Prime lambs sold to a strong trade with 7 individual buyers present resulting in competitive bidding from start to finish. A fantastic show of lambs were forward with a top price of 194ppkg from RG & BM Jones & Son, Ty Mawr or £99/head presented by H & E Powell, Llwyngwilym.

The cull ewes also sold to a strong trade with a top price of £87 going to TW Price & Morgan, Tyrosser.

1627 Prime Lambs – Average 183.09ppkg

89 Cull ewes – Average £60.38

Standards (354) to 186ppkg from JE Evans & Son, Middle Nantserth and averaged 175.89ppkg.

Mediums (1067) to 194ppkg from JE Evans & Son, Middle Nantserth and averaged 185.03ppkg.

Heavies (113) to 194ppkg from RG & BM Jones & Son, Ty Mawr and averaged 189.45ppkg.

Welshpool Livestock Sales report on the Sale at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday.

OTMS (21)

A larger number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £1287.36 (149ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 864kg from EL Evans, Derlwyn. R Parry, Gellidywyll made 156ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 729kg making £1137.24. OTM bulls topped at £1167.60 (120ppkg) for a Limousin bull weighing 973kg from CJ Davies & Son, Waengwyn. Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £791.70 (130ppkg) for a Salers cow weighing 609kg from GG Williams, West Fedw. Heifers under 48 months topped at £1019.20 (140ppkg) for a Limousin heifer weighing 728kg from DP Evans, Moel Y Garth.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (12) 123.9ppkg / £846.44

OTM Bull (3) 118ppkg / £1100.54

Cows 48-72 Months (3) 124.46ppkg / £781.19

Heifers Under 48 months (2) 137.53ppkg / £990.88

Steers U48 (1) 170ppkg / £1105

PRIME LAMBS (3375)

A larger entry of lambs forward sold to return an average of ppkg, with a top price of 233ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 42kg making £98 and also 48kg making £112 all from D Jones, Graig Fach, with £112/head being top price of the day.

A larger entry of lambs forward sold to a slower trade than last week which was in line with other market prices from late last week. Once again best quality, well meated lambs were in most demand with competitive bidding throughout the sale on these types. Heavier weight lambs were again in better demand with fewer of theses types on offer. Lightier weight lambs continue to find a good trade especially the better bred types with some of these going to further feeding.

Lights (433) to 202ppkg from Ellis Lloyd & Co, Garthiaen. Others to 196ppkg from JHH Jerman & Co, Wernddu. Average of 179.19ppkg.

Standards (1106) to 224ppkg from DD & MJ Evans, Pantywynthrew. Others to 205ppkg from NG & GG Davies, Trawsgelli . Average of 181.01ppkg.

Mediums (1688) to 233ppkg from D Jones, Graig Fach. Others to 221ppkg from CJ & ME Williams, Minysarn.  Average of 186.58ppkg.

Heavies (483) to 233ppkg from D Jones, Graig Fach. Others to 224ppkg from the same home. Average of 187.22ppkg. 

CULL SHEEP (3549)

This week we saw a terrific entry of 3487 cull ewes that sold to a solid trade once again. The best sold ewes this week were once again the heaviest ewes on the yard being Texel and Suffolk x , with any amount of these selling between £90 and £105. 13 individual buyers present once again with competitive bidding throughout. The best Welsh and Speckled Face ewes were still very well sold, however the leanest and lightest of these were slightly harder work on the week. Top price of the day went to CE Pryce, Yr Helyg that sold Texel ewes at £148. Other Texel ewes sold to £147 (x4), £144 (x6), £141 (x5) and £139.50 (x4). We cannot emphasise enough how important it is that cull ewes are shorn from now on as premium's for as much as £20 were achieved this week for ewes that had been shorn. A very respectable average of £59.85 was achieved this week with many smaller ewes present pulling the average down £3.38 to last week.

12 cull rams were present this week to average £79.92 with a top price of £115 going to IP Davies & Son, Heniarth Farm.

BREEDING EWES

A first entry of 300 breeding ewes hit ring 4, being a couple of weeks earlier than normal amd sold to a bouyant trade with Suffolk x yearling ewes peaking at £155 from TR Craig, Westwood Farm with others to £150 from the same home and JL Morgan, Tynllwyn. Texel yearlings hit £140 from Mr Morgan as well.

A strong entry of aged ewes peaked at £189 for 3 Pure Suffolks from AD Lee, Maydene, with cross bred Suffolks in flock ages hit £121 and crossbred Texels peaked at £107 both from E Jackson, Lane Farm.
