PRIME LAMBS (4484)

A entry of 4484 lambs forward sold to return an average of 163.7ppkg, with a top price of 200ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 42kg making £84 from TE Davies, Birchen House, and £100.50/head for 65kg lambs from DP Casewell, Tanrhiw.

A similar number of lambs on offer, sold to a slightly slower trade throughout, compared to last week, which would be in line with other local and national livestock prices last week. Again most competitive bidding was for the better quality, better meated, better bred lambs of any weight which sold up to top prices of 200ppkg and £100.50. Heavier weight lambs again attracted keen interest especially for the better fleshed types. Export weight lambs (39-45kgs) found a difficult trade especially for the poorer bred  ones, with yet again better quality lambs in this weight selling to most demand. Lighter weight lambs continue to sell to a two tiered trade with better bred and leaner lambs selling well with some of these going back on farm as store lambs. Small welsh bred lambs again sold well on the day due to a small number of these types being forward.

Lights (283) to 194ppkg from BL Griffiths, Lower Penygelli. Others to 167ppkg from GW Jones, Henfryn. Average of 148.99ppkg.

Standards (827) to 175ppkg from H Hughes & Son, Hendy. Others to 172ppkg from MM & R Morris, Maestanyglwyden. Average of 156.96ppkg.

Heavies (1248) to 198ppkg from MRM Matthews & Co, Tanyfron. Others to 181ppkg from DR Owen & Sons, Sandilands Farm. Average of 161.74ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (3416)

This was down £10.51 on the week but generally the ewes forward this week were not as strong and this is reflected in the average. Demand for cull rams was stronger this week with a few farmers looking for rams for their own use. Top price of the da went to D Davies, Moelfryn Mawr that sold a ram at £126. The overall average for the 43 rams present was £62.09.
