Welshpool Livestock Sales report on their sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (48)

A similar number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £1151.70 (165ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 698kg from GP Vaughan & Son, Dolcorsllwyn. G & A Williams, Nantygeifr made 149ppkg for a British Blue x weighing 685kg making £1020.65. Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £1012.44 (118ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 858kg from GP Pugh & Son, The Garth.  NF & MR Gittins, Tynewydd Isa made 115ppkg for a Hereford x weighing 683kg making £785.45. Heifers under 48 months topped at £1102.71 (177ppkg) for a heifer weighing 623kg from JT Jones, Tynewydd Cyffin.

TH Turner & Co, Red House made 150ppkg for a Limousin x heifer weighing 681kg making £1021.50.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Bull (1) 105ppkg / £1167.60

Cows 48-72 Months (7) 97.29ppkg / £581.09

Heifers Under 48 months (5) 139.29ppkg / £902.30

PRIME LAMBS (4186)

An entry of lambs forward sold to return an average of 165.66ppkg, with a top price of 213ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 82kg making £ from CR Pryce, Yr Helyg.

A similar number of lambs on offer sold to an improved trade throughout, with more competitive bidding on all weights and grades of lambs. Yet again better quality, better meated lambs were in most demand. Export weight lambs (39 – 45 kilos) sold to a much sharper trade with keener bidding on these types than in recent weeks. Again heavy weight lambs (especially the very heavy ones) continue to sell well with plenty of pens selling at £90 and above. Very few lighter weight lambs on offer and again these sold to an improved demand with a number of the better bred smaller lambs going back out, on farm, as store lambs. Vendors are encouraged to keep drawing lambs for sale especially the well fleshed types.

Lights (151) to 177ppkg from J Banks, Appledown. Others to 173ppkg from RE Peate, Nantllachar. Average of 160.71ppkg.

Standards (729) to 196ppkg from DW & L Jones, Arbennig. Others to 181ppkg from CR Davies, Troedrhiwfronfrech. Average of 168.57ppkg.

Mediums (1679) to 191ppkg from DD & MJ Evans, Pantywynthrew. Others to 188ppkg from DE Morgan & Co, Cefntwlch.  Average of 161.01ppkg.

Heavies (1376) to 188ppkg from DP Casewell, Tanrhiw. Others to 184ppkg from ME & MB Roberts, Woodleasowes. Average of 153.69ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2577)

This week we saw an increased entry of 2504 cull ewes meeting a strong trade throughout once again with an overall average of £46.88 being achieved.  This was down £3.28 on the week however, the ewes forward this week generally werent as strong. Top price of the day of £130 was achieved by CE Pryce, Yr Helyg for a terrific Texel ewe. The trade on the strongest crossbred ewes wasnt quite as strong as last week, however many of the best ewes were still selling in excess of £85. Top price in the cull rams was achieved by JP & CM Jones, Maesterran that sold 2 Welsh yearling rams for £300.

Texel yearlings to £140, £134, £132 and £130 x3, Mule yearlings to £135, £133, £132 twice and £130 x3. Welsh yearlings to £125, £118 twice and £115, Cheviots to £132, £130 and £128 twice, Lleyns to £130 twice, £128 and £125 and Aberfield yearlings to £151, £150, £149 and £145.

Texel 2 year olds to £95, Mules to £91, Welsh to £67  and Blue Faced Leicesters to £84. 3 year old Texels to £78, Suffolks to £102, Mules to £60 and Welsh to £98. Full mouth Texels to £97, Suffolks to £92, Speckles to £56, Mules to £78.

Another increased entry of just shy of 1300 Store lambs again sold well to a large crowd of buyers.

Texel theaves to £59, £56 twice and £55. Mules to £45, £44 and £43 and Welsh to £39.

Texel mixed and clean to £63 twice, £60.50 and £60, Suffolks to £56, Mules to £47, Beltex to £56, Charollais to £55 and Lleyns to £65.

Kerry Hill wethers to £61.50 and £54.50 with Cheviot wethers to £58.

Texel tups to £64, £62 and £61.50, Suffolks to £60.50, £59.50 and £57, Mules to £62, £58 and £55.50 twice, Welsh to £53.50, £39.50 and £37, Charollais to £55.
