Welshpool Livestock Sales report on the Sale at Buttington Cross on Monday

OTMS (46)

A larger number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £1135 (136ppkg) for a British Blue x OTM weighing in at 835kg from PA Lloyd & TS Wierzbinski, Cartref. CJ Davies & Son, Waengwyn made 149ppkg for a British Blue x weighing 791kg making £1052.03. Heifers under 48 months topped at £1160.32 (196ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 592kg from Red House Farm. A Rowlands & Son, Noyadd Fach made 174ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 575kg making £1000.50. Bulls under 72 months topped at £1131.25 (125ppkg) for a Salers Bull weighing 905kg from J & B Vaughan, Sychtyn. TH Turner & Co, Red House made 156ppkg for a Limousin bull weighing 630kg making £982.80.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (40) 115.36ppkg / £763.99

Heifers Under 48 months (4) 151.78ppkg / £895.14

Bulls Under 72 months (2) 137.72ppkg / £1057.03

Overall Average 119.32ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (3680)

An smaller entry of lambs forward sold to return an average of 209.86ppkg, with a top price of 246ppkg or £113 a head for pen of lambs weighing 46kg from EL Evans, Derlwyn.

A much smaller entry of Hoggets on offer sold to another strong , competitive trade throughout for all weights and grades. Yet again best quality , well shaped Hoggs sold to a fantastic trade selling up to 246ppkg and £113 per head with plenty of other Hoggs selling to above £100. Most demand was for the well meated 39-45 kilo export weight hoggs with the heavy weight Hoggs also finding a strong competitive trade throughout. Fewer lighter weight Hoggs on offer today which resulted in a good price throughout with again quite a few of these going back out as store lambs. Hopefully trade will remain strong as numbers dry up throughout the country and with the Hogg feeding Vendors not ready to sell yet, demand should remain to be greater than supply.

Lights (694) to 220ppkg from L Roberts & Son, Monksfield. Others to 214ppkg from EA Rees & Co, Borfa Newydd. Average of 195.22ppkg.

Standards (832) to 232ppkg from MA & MD Edwards, Sarnau Villa. Others to 231ppkg from DG & BE Jenkins, Gaerfawr. Average of 210.85ppkg.

Mediums (1257) to 242ppkg from EL Evans & Co, Green Farm. Others to 236ppkg from DM Rowlands, Tyddyn Du.  Average of 214.87ppkg.

Heavies (667) to 246ppkg from EL Evans, Derlwyn. Others to 218ppkg from Bowen & Bowen, Penthryn. Average of 200.23ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2025)

An entry or 1836 cull ewes accompanied by 150 cull rams, which was an increased entry on the previous week. Ewes averaged £69 across the board with an increased entry of small Welsh type ewes. Rams averaged £72.86 and were in strong demand. This was down £7 on the previous week, trade was very strong throughout on all types of ewes.

Mules up to £102

Topping todays trade was a ewe presented by D Jones, Graig Fach which sold to £154, this was closely followed by a ewe presented by DTA Williams, Upper Bolbro.

Overall for a good show of ewes trade was once again met with tremendous demand.

COWS & CALVES

A small entry for the New Year of 2 cows and calves which sold to a good entry for 2 forward. Top was £1900 for a Limousin x 1st Calver with a Limousin x November born calf at foot from RC Davies, Rhydfodrwydd. JBC & AM Gwilliam, Bwlchgarth sold a Limousin x 1st Calver with a Limousin x November born calf at foot for £1480.

STORE LAMBS (912)

An increased entry of 912 and a trade that can only be described as on fire and more lambs could have been sold to vendors advantage.

Theaves: Texels to £78, £76.50, £76 and £74.50, Suffolks to £79, £78 and £69.50, Mules to £65 and £58, Welsh to £59 and £47, Charollais to £70.50, £69, £64 and £63.50.

Mixed and clean: Texels to £83.50, £81, £78 and £72 twice, Suffolks to £77, £74 and £70, Mules to £73, £71 twice and £67, Welsh to £43.50, Charollais to £75, £66 and £58.50.

Wethers: Texels to £84.50, £80 and £72, Speckles to £64, Mules to £57 and Beltex to £67.

Tups: Texels to £85.50 twice, £82, £79.50 and £79 twice, Suffolks to £76.50, £75, £70 and £66.50, Speckles to £53 and £45, Mules to £68, £66 and £49.50, Welsh to £55, £45 and £44 and Charollais to £73 and £70.
