Welshpool Livestock Sales report on the sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (31)

A similar number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £1031.80 (134ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 770kg from TP Jerman, Church Farm. PL Harrison made 138ppkg for a British Blue x weighing 745kg making £1028.10. Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £1168 (160ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 730kg from TP Jerman, Church Farm.  WRL Price & Co, Pencwm made 134ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 755kg making £1011.70. Heifers under 48 months topped at £1069.20 (198ppkg) for a heifer weighing 540kg from A Rowlands & Son, Noyadd Fach.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (18) 121.49ppkg / £775.35

OTM Bull (2) 106.8ppkg / £1142.75

Cows 48-72 Months (6) 132.85ppkg / £865.72

Heifers Under 48 months (4) 167.51ppkg / £948.53

Bulls Under 72 months (1) 110ppkg / £1061.50

Overall Average 126.6ppkg.

PRIME HOGGETS (2988)

An smaller entry of lambs forward sold to return an average of 211.27ppkg, with a top price of 259ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 40kg making £103.50 from SH Lloyd & Son, Penllan, and £124/head for 52kg lambs from the same home. TK Robinson, Tynewydd sold 4 pens of hoggs to average 250ppkg for 41 and 40kg hoggs. 

Again a smaller number of Hoggs on offer and again another strong trade throughout. With a good number of buyers present, competitive bidding was found on all weights and grades of Hoggs. Yet again best quality better shaped Hoggs sold very strongly topping at 259ppkgwith plenty of other pens selling at 230ppkg and above. Heavy weight Hoggs also sold to a very good demand , again especially the better bred types. Export and supermarket weight Hoggs continue to sell to a good competitive trade as do the lighter weight lambs with plenty of hill bred Hoggs selling above 200ppkg, and still a good number of smaller Hoggs going back on farm as stores for further finishing.

It is advised that all Hoggets are belly clipped, before being presented for sale.

Lights (401) to 225ppkg from J Davies, Tyncoed Bungalow and DE Morgan & Co, Cefntwlch. Others to 222ppkg from D Pryce, Llancowrid Farm. Average of 199.45ppkg.

Standards (784) to 241ppkg from Messrs Meredith, Lodge Farm. Others to 237ppkg from DE Morgan & Co, Cefntwlch. Average of 213.95ppkg.

Mediums (1069) to 259ppkg from SH Lloyd & Son, Penllan. Others to 254ppkg from TK Robinson.  Average of 212.66ppkg.

Heavies (485) to 238ppkg from SH Lloyd & Son, Penllan. Others to 232ppkg from EL Evans, Derllwyn. Average of 200.34ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1764)

This week we saw a reduced entry of 1763 cull ewes that met another fantastic trade from start to finish with an overall average of £74.72 being achieved (+ £5.12 on the week) 331 ewes sold for over £100. New buyers present this week resulting in competitive bidding and a tremendous trade once again. Many more could have easily been sold. Top price of the day went to RA Davies, Llwynderw that sold ewes to £171. T & B Williams, Cilmawr sold a terrific pen of 14 Texel x Mule ewes at £130. There was a larger entry of Welsh ewes present this week, including an impressive run of 68 Dolgellau type Welsh ewes from J Roberts, Fedw averaging a fantastic £60.50.

Another strong entry of 121 cull rams that met another good trade averaging £80.17. Top price of £160 went to G & NN Wigley, Rhosdyrnog.

A good number forward for the first store cattle sale of 2020, 69 steers forward averaged 193.38 ppkg or £964.57 per head, 71 heifers averaged 191.96ppkg or £881.93 per head and 7 bulls averaged 161.26ppkg or £802.86 per head. Leading prices are as follows:
