Livestock Sales prices ‘steadier’

Last week’s record trade at Welshpool Livestock Sales were not repeated as market prices reported as ‘steady’ on Monday.

OTMS (24)

A similar number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £1113 (140ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 795kg from JH & ML Breeze, South Moelygarth. JES Corfield, Woodgate Farm made 137ppkg for an OTM weighing 768kg making £983.04. Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £1334 (145ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 920kg from JJ Thomas & Son, Penybanc.  JH & ML Breeze, South Moelygarth made 148ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 694kg making £1027.12. Heifers under 48 months topped at £856.70 (130ppkg) for a heifer weighing 659kg from JA Williams Llechwedd Ddyrys.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (19) 116.3ppkg / £737.90

Cows 48-72 Months (4) 127.46ppkg / £978.90

Heifers Under 48 months (1) 130ppkg / £856.70

Overall Average 119.04ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (26)

An entry of 26 spring lambs averaged 198.22ppkg selling up to 207ppkg for 42.5kg lambs from RJ Jenkins, Glanrhos or £96.50/head for 49.5kg lambs from the same home.

PRIME HOGGS (2254)

The hoggs forward sold to return an average of 187.47ppkgppkg, with a top price of 232ppkg for pen of hoggs weighing 33kg making £76.50 from D & S Jones, Brynglas Bach, and £100/head for 59.5kg hoggs from A Thomas, Neuadd Llwyd.

Lights (358) to 218ppkg from RJ Jones & Co, Tymawr. Others to 207ppkg from RE Peate, Nantllachar. Average of 194.97ppkg.

Standards (450) to 232ppkg from D & S Jones, Brynglas Bach. Others to 223ppkg from IE Roberts & Son, Maesdyfnant. Average of 195.72ppkg.

Mediums (679) to 214ppkg from Lythwood Sheep. Others to 213ppkg from the same home.  Average of 180.18ppkg.

Heavies (441) to 195ppkg from A Thomas, Neuadd Llwyd. Others to 194ppkg from S Smith, Pentre Farm Cottage. Average of 175.6ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2595)

This week we had an increased entry of 2,427 cull ewes that met a much steadier trade as expected with an overall average of £64.08 being achieved. Top price of the day went to A Thomas, Neuadd Llwyd, that sold a terrific pen of Texel ewes for £156. Plain ewes were very hard work, but the best heavy ewes were still all over £100.

159 cull rams averaged £59.56 and a top price of £115 being achieved by CE Pryce, Yr Helyg.

COUPLES

On a day when the general sheep trade took a dramatic lull – ewes and lamb vendors came off slightly better than most!

Texels hit £135 for singles from S & T Evans, Coedhirion and twins to £235 from CE & GT Roberts, Rhydycil

Suffolks with singles to £138 from S & T Evans, Coedhirion and twins to £170 from JM & IM Lewis, Erwbrafe.

Mules with singles peaked at £138 from T & JT Jones, Penygraig and twins to £152 from Brook Farms.

Welsh singles to £100 from T & JT Jones, Penygraig and Beltex twins to £230 from S & T Evans, Coedhirion.

Charollais with singles to £110 and twins to £172 from WJ & BM Lewis, Fferm.

STORE HOGGS

No surprises that less were about give the drastic decline in the fat lamb price the store were never going to be very brisk!

Tup lambs hit £70 twice from RW Richards & Son, Hafod with theave lambs peaking at £57.50.

Averages

Theaves - £50.82

Tups - £46.46

Overall - £47.06

Cades averaged £11.25 and up to £20 from DI Jones, Cwm.
