Reduced stock at Livestock Market

Trade was quiet at Welshpool Livestock Sales at Buttington Cross on Monday with the current crisis blamed.

OTMS (4)

A reduced number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £641.70 (90ppkg) for a Blonde d'Aquitaine x OTM weighing in at 713kg from RT Watkins, Coedyderi. Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £765 (102ppkg) for a Hereford x weighing 750kg from R Price, Brynglas. Steers under 48 months topped at £704 (160ppkg) for a Limousin x steer weighing 440kg from J Pryce, The Smithy.

PRIME LAMBS (8)

An entry of 8 spring lambs averaged 220.78ppkg selling up to 270ppkg for 32kg lambs making £86.50 from R Price, Brynglas or £101.50/head for 47kg lambs from N Oughton, Lymore Farm.

PRIME HOGGS (815)

An entry of 815 hoggs forward sold to return an average of 192.96ppkg, with a top price of 245ppkg for pen of hoggs weighing kg making £93 from GR & SJ Lloyd, Esgair Inglis, and £100/head for 48kg hoggs from CJ & LM Davies, Lawn Farm.

A greatly reduced entry due to the drop in price as a result of the Coronavirus, sold to a slightly improved trade throughout with enough demand to sell the numbers of sheep entered. In most demand was the lighter weight, up to 40kg hoggs with these generally selling around 200ppkg. Most difficult trade was for the heavy weight, 50kg plus hoggs which traditionally have been sold into the catering trade and therefore demand for these types has been greatly reduced. Slightly more interest on the middle weight export lambs as European markets continue to reopen.

Standards (234) to 245ppkg from GR & SJ  Lloyd, Esgair Inglis. Others to 210ppkg from DG & BE Jenkins, Gaerfawr. Average of 197.17ppkg.

Mediums (245) to 222ppkg from CJ & LM Davies, Lawn Farm. Others to 302ppkg from JR & JPR Andrew, Bronheulog.  Average of 190.10ppkg.

Heavies (234) to 208ppkg from CJ & LM Davies, Lawn Farm. Others to 204ppkg from JR & JPR Andrew, Bronheulog. Average of 184.32ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (120)

A greatly reduced entry of 120 cull ewes averaged £66.06 and sold to £110 from GA Thomas, Penllain. With an entry of only 3 rams averaging £77.33.
