08/04/2020 @ 11:24

There was a welcome improvement to overall trade at Welshpool Livestock Sales on Monday.

OTMS

Cull Cows, Cull Bulls, Up to 72 months and Clean Beef Wanted.

As a result of the corona virus the above section has been very quiet the last two Monday's.

However, the demand is starting to filter through and both slaughter and grazing animals are being requested by our buyers old and new.

Should anybody want to sell any category of cattle in this section please contact our market office of Glandon Lewis on 07774224999 to pre book.

We will be in operation next Monday, the bank holiday.

PRIME LAMBS (178)

A decent number of generally good quality spring lambs forward averaged 264.38ppkg and sold to a competitive trade throughout, especially for the better quality, better meated lambs which sold up to a top price of 304ppkg. Middle range 36-42 kilo lambs in most demand with a buyers present looking for Easter weekend spring lamb.

Lights (10) to 302ppkg from DC Jerman, Ty Gwellt. Others to 285ppkg from DC Jerman, Ty Gwellt. Average of 294.34ppkg.

Standards (37) to 293ppkg from NC & AGM Davies. Penysir. Others to 277ppkg from T Evans, Pendre. Average of 264.09ppkg.

Mediums (124) to 304ppkg from JH Davies, Werngadno. Others to 284ppkg from JH Davies, Werngadno.  Average of 262.68ppkg.

Heavies (6) to 233ppkg from L & PA Morris & Sons, Mount Farm. Others to 229ppkg from FW Humphreys & Sons, Brook House Farm. Average of 224.58ppkg.

Thank you to the Suffolk Sheep Society, Charollais Sheep society and Bibbys for sponsoring our Easter Spring Lamb sale. Top price pence per kilo winner was JH Davies, Werngadno at 304ppkg.

PRIME HOGGS (3914)

An entry of 3914 hoggs forward sold to return an average of 222.45ppkg, with a top price of 274ppkg for pen of hoggs weighing 38kg making £104 from EW Jones, Tytanyfoel, and £118.50/head for 47kg hoggs from JA Wood & Sons, Kinnerton Farm.

A much larger number of finished hoggets forward, after last week's increase in demand and price, sold to generally a good competitive trade throughout at price levels better than anticipated, as all markets were expecting a large number of sheep forward. Best sold on the day would be the better quality, better bred, better shaped Hoggs of any weight, but especially between 40-47 kilos. Lighter weight hoggs sold to a good demand with less numbers of these types on offer, resulting in good competitive bidding throughout the sale. Middle weight export and supermarket weight Hoggs sold to a good demand at price levels, again, well above the current deadweight price. Most difficult to sell on the day were the heavier weight 48+ kilo Hoggs, and the bigger they were the more difficult they were to sell. Trade fell away slightly later in the sale but overall a very pleasing sale considering the numbers forward, and at considerably higher prices than current dead weight quotes.  Where would the current price for Hoggets be if the livestock markets were closed? Sell live and thrive.

Lights (223) to 244ppkg from CJ Thomas, Beili Ddol. Others to 237ppkg from WD Walters-Davies, Fferm Wylfa. Average of 225.74ppkg.

Standards (512) to 274ppkg from EW Jones & Co, Tytanyfoel. Others to 235ppkg from P Davies, Highland Farm. Average of 217.35ppkg.

Mediums (1371) to 265ppkg from JR & JPR Andrew, Bronheulog. Others to 254ppkg from the same home.  Average of 223.67ppkg.

Heavies (1393) to 252ppkg from JA Wood & Sons, Kinnerton Farm. Others to 241ppkg from Lythwood Sheep, Shrewsbury. Average of 210.65ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (611)
