Drop in trade at Livestock Market

Welshpool Livestock Sales report on their sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (29)

A similar number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £1080 (120ppkg) for a British Blue x OTM weighing in at 900kg from JN Owen, Penybont. C Woosnam & TA Mathias, Forest made 153ppkg for a British Blue x weighing 690kg making £1055.70. Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £940.80 (168ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 560kg from EE & MJ Jones & Sons, Cwmbychan.  E LL Jones, Bryngwaeddan made 172ppkg for a Salers x weighing 520kg making £894.40. Bulls under 72 months topped at £1064 (133ppkg) for a Limousin bull weighing 800kg from Davies & James, Gwenlas.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (15) 112.21ppkg / £746.96

Cows 48-72 Months (13) 136.36ppkg / £726.89

Bulls Under 72 months (1) 133ppkg / £1064

PRIME LAMBS (583)

A smaller entry of lambs forward sold to return an average of 267.87ppkg, with a top price of 312ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 33kg making £ from AK Lloyd, Ivy House Farm, and £121/head for 44kg lambs from FW Humphreys & Sons, Brook House.

A smaller number of Lambs on offer sold to a much stronger trade with good demand for all weights. Best demand for the better bred and well fleshed lambs with the best-selling weight being up to 42 kilos. Smaller weight lambs continue to sell to a strong demand as the numbers of hoggs dry up. Larger numders of all weights will now be required as fewer hoggs are sold.

Standards (247) to 312ppkg from AK Lloyd, Ivy House Farm. Others to 297ppkg from Bowen & Bowen, Penthryn. Average of 269.10ppkg.

Mediums (323) to 289ppkg twice from RE & CJ Davies, Boycott Hall. Others to 288ppkg from the same vendor.  Average of 267.02ppkg.

Heavies (10) to 252ppkg from RE & CJ Davies, Boycott Hall. Others to 246ppkg from J Corfield & Sons, Fairfield. Average of 224.9ppkg.

PRIME HOGGS (2212)

An entry of hoggs forward sold to return an average of 215.05ppkg, with a top price of 251ppkg for pen of hoggs weighing 39kg making £98 from CJ & LM Davies, Lawn Farm, and £107/head for 49.5kg hoggs from MPB Ashton & Son, Belanddu.

A much smaller number of hoggs on offer sold to an improved trade throughout especially for the better meated middle range export and supermarket weight hoggs (39-47kilos). Lighter weight hoggs continue to sell to a strong demand as numbers forward drop. Fewer heavier weight hoggs also on offer which created an improved trade throughout. Heavier weight hoggs continue to be most difficult to sell due to the lack of demand from the catering outlets. Hopefully this will change in the near future. Vendors with hoggs left are encouraged to make sure any hoggs sold are well fleshed as demand will continue throughout May.

Heavies (464) to 227ppkg from CJ & LM Davies, Lawn Farm. Others to 222ppkg from RG & PJ Edwards, Ivy End Farm. Average of 203.17ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (888)

A reduced entry of 888 cull ewes this week with an average of £69.70 being achieved. Top price of the day of £153 was achieved by DES & ER Bickerton, Lloran Uchaf. A good run of Texel x ewes presented by new distanced vendor D Williams & Partners, Henllys, Llanfair Talhaiarn sold to £117 with the whole run averaging just short of £100.

Rams sold to £124 from EH Pennie & Son, Gwern Yr Ychain and average £84.20.
