Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a busy day at Buttington Cross on Monday.

Welshpool Livestock Sales reports yet another excellent entry of 43 OTMs on Monday.

This total takes this section to have handled 470 cattle since the lockdown in March.

The quality on offer was yet again of a high standard with a centre record being broken with a magnificent £1955.20 for a 59-month Pedigree Limousin cow (1040kg at 188ppkg from CV & EM Lewis, Buttington, New Hall selling to our regular weekly buyer Mr Tony Jones.

Seven buyers attend the the market weekly and WLS are very grateful to the vendors and accept the drop and go system, as well as the buyers who adhere to the 2 metre distancing rules.

A similar number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £1309 (154ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 850kg from RJ Roberts, Dysefin Farm. E Jones & Son, Penbontpren made 157ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 815kgkg making £1279.55. Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £1955.20 (188ppkg) for a Limousin weighing 1040kg from CV & EM Lewis, Buttington New Hall.  BM Evans, Coedygarth made 157ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 750kg making £1177.50. Heifers under 48 months topped at £910.20 (148ppkg) for a heifer weighing 615kg from EL Evans, Derlwyn.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (27) 132.25ppkg / £861.62

OTM Bull (1) 120ppkg / £1224

Cows 48-72 Months (12) 146.36ppkg / £990.95

Heifers Under 48 months (2) 138.62ppkg / £641.10

Steers Under 72 months (1) 151ppkg / £948.28

Overall Average 136.48ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (3701)

An entry of lambs forward sold to return an average of 217.96ppkg, with a top price of 263ppkg for pen of lambs weighing kg making £ from TH Vaughan & Son, Maes Mochnant Uchaf, and £150/head for kg lambs from DN Bennett & Son, Upper Hall.

A few less lambs forward today sold to a better than expected trade as the trade fell away at the end of last week. Good competitive bidding throughout the sale on all weights and grades of lambs which heavy weight lambs again being in strong demand as there were very few of these forward. Better quality, better bred export lambs continue to sell very strongly as demand in Europe remains good. There was also some call for middle weight (34-39kg) tup lambs which were being stored for the upcoming festival. 

Light weight lambs, especially the better quality, well fleshed types sold to a good competitive trade throughout. Please keep drawing well meated lambs every week.

Standards (1455) to 251ppkg from TE Davies, Birchen House. Others to 247ppkg from DW Davies & Co, Peniarth. Average of 214.71ppkg.

Mediums (1518) to 263ppkg from TH Vaughan & Son, Maes Mochnant Uchaf. Others to 261ppkg from the same vendor.  Average of 221.02ppkg.

Heavies (164) to 250ppkg from TG & EA Jones, Blaenwaen Ganol. Others to 245ppkg from DN Bennett & Son, Upper Hall. Average of 225.04ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (3134)

Another strong entry of 3134 cull ewes with an overall average of £61.99 being achieved. Smaller lean Mules and Welsh ewes were harder sold because of so many of theses types on offer. However, heavy lean Texels and Suffolk x ewe were dearer because of the shortage of strength on offer this week. 

Top price of the day was achieved by CE Pryce, Yr Helyg that sold Texel ewes for £150. Plenty of Mules sold between £50 and £65.

COUPLES

Last sale of 2020 saw an entry of 135, with sheep on offer for all budgets. Topping at £265 for Texel hoggs with twins from J Lewis & Son, Penyffynon.

A run of aged ewes and late entries saw 9 Suffolk full mouth ewes with 13 lambs hit £152 and Texel full mouth/as found ewes with singles hit £120.

The majority of hoggs and lambs entered traded between £150 and £175, with the best sorts creeping to £200 and the poorest £80 to £100.

COWS & CALVES

An entry of 85 cows and calves met with a solid trade once again, with an excellent trade on the best outfits.

Leading the way was AG & MT Davies, Llys Farm, Denbigh with a British Blue x Limousin 1st calver with a cracking heifer calf at foot which sold for £4650. From the same home was a Limousin x 1st calver with a Limousin x bull calf which made £3250. Six outfits sold to average £2870.

IP Jones, Maestyddyn, Corwen sold a Pure Limousin 1st calver with a heifer calf to £3200. HJ Williams, Maesgadfa, Bala made £2900 for a British Blue x Limousin 1st calver with a heifer calf. JS Vance & Son, Upper Grimmer sold a Pedigree Limousin 2nd calver with a heifer calf for £2700. A 2015 born cow with a bull calf from M & T Jones, Gesailfa sold for £2500, others from the same home being part of a herd dispersal made £2080, £1900 and £1780. JE & JT Evans & Son, Upper Cefnpenarth sold a Limousin x cow with a heifer cow for £1920.
