The week that was...

23/05/2011 @ 09:53

Welshpool has never known a week like it. It was seven days that included tragedy and the sort of fugitive manhunt we normally see on television.

Add in stories about an airliner being ‘lasered’ in Welshpool airspace, the ongoing fight against energy plans and a man with an alleged handgun being apprehended by off-duty officers close to the Westwood, and it’s not surprising that mywelshpool’s visitor-figure records were smashed.

Mywelshpool worked closely with all the authorities involved in the big stories over the past week to keep you up-to-date with developments as they happened and as a result our numbers shot through the roof, according to the latest figures released by Google.

Just look at how the week panned out. These are the daily visits to the site and it has edged us even closer to the incredible milestone of one million page views.

Sunday: 1,435
Monday: 1,558
Tuesday: 1,551
Wednesday: 1,927
Thursday: 4,450
Friday: 3,557
Saturday: 1,199

Weekly total: 15,677

At one stage on Thursday night, it was estimated that up to 3,500 computers were logged on to mywelshpool at the same time and refreshing the page to grab the latest manhunt news, causing our server to crash for around 45 minutes due to the high demand. Many thanks to you all for your patience and help.

Our Twitter followers were receiving tweets as they happened from the scene and Facebook followers, which now number just under 2,000, also received regular updates to ensure that the police were backed up in their search by thousands of residents keeping their eyes peeled.

Our mission to bring you all the local news and sport is proving increasingly popular and we will continue to do our best to keep you in the loop, free of charge.

Many thanks for all the kind emails and Facebook messages over the past week. This is your site and your input and support is what keeps us ticking.

We have worked hard to earn your respect and support which we fully appreciate in these competitive modern media times. Our promise is to pull out the stops to remain your Number One choice for local news.

Thank you and long may it continue.
